same here, 225/45/r17s are feckin useless. I've just ebayed a couple of 16 wheels and going to try sticking on 205/55r16s winters. Should come tomorrow.. which is great because it's thick ice around here and we are due snow tonight. :D

It's not the just the width of the tyres.
You need to have sufficient weight, so your footprint with the 225's is too big, not exerting enough pressure on the snow or ice.
If you had a heavier vehicle, 225's would be OK.

I have 265 x 70 x r17, BFG AT KO with the snowflake, and they are absolutely amazing in snow.
Sure, they are not on a lightweight Golf !

I always presumed it's because the treads are rubbish for snow/mud, and they only really come in summer tyres.
