I've just read on a thread somewhere on the iternet that you can't put chains on a freelander with 17" rims. Anyone know if this is correct or someone who hasn't got a clue ? I only ask because I'm heading up the alps in a few weeks time, and the Frenchies insist on chains in their resorts. What is this thing all about?

Hi Windycar,
Don't know if it's too late but;
Definitely Can't put standard chains on 17" alloys with 255-55-17's, run your hand around the inside of the tyre at the top.
It won't go past the steering arm or strut (only <10mm clearance) Likely you'll damage vital parts. :eek:
Looked at Michelin Easy Grip (£100) sort of skinny bungy chain and TUV approved for France but even the elastic has not enough clearance to the steering at the back. :eek:

You can fit the front mounted chains (cost a packet tho');
Spikes Spider - Alpine A2 or Sport SXL @ £240 or £265
Maggi Trak MG215 (car) or MGLT45 (4x4) @ £200 or £260
Theres always the LR listed version of Spikes Spider @ £400+
Just Google and you'll find them.
I'm looking at France for April - looks like I better get savin!! :mad:

when i lived in france i had two sets o wheels.
steelies for winter cos the snow chains will shag ya tyres.
Get a set of cheap wheels,second hand is best and fit nokian winter tyres.I doubt you will even have to get out and put chains on with those bad boys.
Save ya allys for the summer.
careful BoB........yer slippin..a sensible ansur fer once. carnt last can it :eek:

Fred was runnin' on FL1 17" Alloys.
I went for a set of S/H Maggi Traks off Ebay, had to "adjust" the wheel nut clamp device to fit the FL Alloy wheel nuts - but they go on & off a treat and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Only had dry runs so far - was clear when we drove out to the Alps.
But they do mount on the outside of the wheel, run on the tread surface only of the tyre (nothing round the back) and are well clear of the Alloys when in use.
Would think that they should suit the FL2 a treat but if you have clearance standard chains will be a lot cheaper.
