Snow 4x4 driving HELP!

I have '97 Range 4.6Hse LPG Auto.
When I put the car into off-roading gears, the bleeping/illuminated gears on dash never ends and and I cannot put it into 4wheel drive,??
I want to drive in the snow how safe would I be with just the normal fixed 4x4 ?Idont have snow chains .Thanks
any advice/tips appreciated....
 
Hi. The range rover is permanent 4 wheel drive. The small gear lever I think you are referring to is the low range (off road) / High range (normal on road driving). Normal high range is quite ok for snow (obviously take more care than on dry roads). I drive my Range Rover Classic in Poland where we get an awful lot of snow and use 80% on road 20% off road tyres. I do carry chains but have never had to use them - nor do I use low range.
Go out and enjoy the conditions - you have the car for it
 
Its a viscous coupling 4wd innit?Should find grip if theres any to be had.Low range wont be suitable for on road driving in most conditions.Are you having problems driving it noramlly?
 
Shouldn't use low range in snow, in fact you shouldn't really use 1st - too much torque will make the wheels spin and yer'll be all over the place!

First!!!!! Never seen you engage anything lower than third..Should change your name to the speedster:D
 
i usually try and set off in 5th (high) on the lanes we do :D:D:D

Hold clutch down, foot flat on throttle, into third, drop clutch ... a most excellent method of setting off whatever the conditions ... ;)

Best used on the road, with diff-lock on, for recovery purposes with a 90' rope, setting off from within 1' of the stuck vehicle ... sorts the good chassis from the rusted.
