Think i've snapped the timing belt on my 200tdi, I went through some deep-ish water without a snorkel:doh: I got through it ok and was stood ticking over for 20-30 secs and then the engine cut out, when I tried to start it the engine spun over but would'nt start. I did'nt hear any strange metalic sounds or anything, do the valves touch the pistons on this engine? could I get away with just replacing the timing belt (if it has snapped)?

You've probberbly took in water and hydrauliced the engine. If the belt had snapped it wouldn't turn over. Take the intake pipes off and drain the water from them then remove the injectors out and turn the engine over to expell the water then put em back in and see what happens.

If the timing belt has snapped the pistons will hit the valves. Unless you have been extremely lucky I would have thought you'd know about the broken timing belt.

Easy way of telling though - take the rocker cover off and turn it over by hand and see what you can see.

hmm, don't know what to think! been told of the pushrods bending before knackering the valves, apparently the pushrods bend alot easier than the valves???

Thats true but it sounds like yo hydraliced your enjun totaly different kettle of fish. Take the cyl head off and have a look from there.

It is more due to the fact that the valves are vertical in the head and so get pushed back up by the piston causing the pushrods to bend.

Cam belt failure in other engines with valves that run at an angle will cause bend valves and probable cracked valve guides too.

Ok, quick update, the timing belt has snapped, it has bent 4 puhrods, I have removed the rocker assembly and the pusrods, all of the inlet valves are water tight and the valves seem to move freely enough when I press them down with a hammer shaft. The reason I say that the inlets are water tight is that there was dirty water in the inlet, so whilst the valves were shut I ran water into the inlet ports to clean them out and soaked the water up with paper towel :). Ive just ordered a full set of pushrods and a timing belt, so hopefully I should be back on the road soon.

Did you get a headgasket and waterpump gasket too?

BTW you were lucky :D

Madness.
Imagine actually putting water in there.

Take out the INJECTORS.

Turn the engine carefully to TOP DEAD CENTER and dip a rod into number one injector hole till it hits a piston crown. Ideally use the probe end of a vernier caliper.

Now check how deep that is.

Now check number 4 exactly the same way. It should be exactly the same.

Rotate the crankshaft exactly HALF a turn.

Check cylinders 2 and 3.

ALL should be exactly the same. If any one is LONGER (that is, pistone deeper) then it is almost certain you have muffed the measuring or you have a BENT CON-ROD, or you aren't at top dead centre.

With all the pushrods out, and the stopper wire OFF the solenoid, turn the engine over on the starter. If it obviously chug chug chugs evenly, chances are all the valves are seating, and none of the valves or conrods are bent.

Fit a new belt and 8 pushrods.

SHE LIVES!!! replace all 8 pushrods, and new timing belt, the old belt looked like it had'nt been changed in years! I took the injectors out and spun it over a few times, replaced the injectors and fired it up, it started 1st flick of the key!!! been talking to a few people about this, one person told me his cambelt snapped and bent 6 pushrods!!! I think the reason for it snapping the belt was that there was no plug in the bottom of the belt casing and water/mud got in there, and that the belt was way over due for changing. I have to agree with andyb666; "It is more due to the fact that the valves are vertical in the head and so get pushed back up by the piston causing the pushrods to bend."
Anyhow new snorkel should be finished tomorrow, so water/mud here I come!!!:)

You'll have some nice valve shaped dents in the top of your pistons.

Ask Discomania to show you his pics - after he took the head off an allegedly sound newly sorted 300 tdi he was supplied by an alleged LandRover expert independent up here, that he and I won't be using again.

Pistons smacked big time.

Sorted now. And it got 8 new valve guides, the head-face trued, and some new valves.

H-Reg Def 90, Disco transfer box ... Disco back axle.
It GOES ......... WOW, and it STOPS!
