Smoking

Hi just come back from another caravan weekend,all was going well until about 20 miles from home then i noticed some plumes of black smoke from the back,also it crept inside the car (poor kid in the back) it happened when i get to 2000 revs,the car then looses power for a short while and then a puff of smoke clears and then all is ok again,get to 2000 again same,so i pulled over and had a look,now im not a mechanic at all,but there was some oil spitting out,i found where it was coming from and its that short stubby L shaped hose (dont know what its called) but found a long split in it well actually a bit split and a hole,so my question is obviously i need a new one,what is it called is it expensive to buy,can a novice (husband) fit it,and would it be the reason for the past few days prior to my weekend away that i have heard a whistling air intake/blowing sound coming from under the bonnet.Im going to have to drive it today for a very short journey and will keep it under 2000,will it do it any harm?

Hi Donna
If it is the small L shaped black fat hose to the front left of the engine bay then that is an intercooler hose. You can easily replace it and costs about £7 from LR stealer.
It is held by two jubilee clips which require the use of a flat head screwdriver to remove. Just unscrew the clips either side of the hose and slip it out. All in all should take about 5 mins to replace. It will be exactly the reason it is smoking because the air will be leaking from there.

Thats the little bugger lol,thankyou so much i just ordered it from our LR dealer it was £7.70 i got it for £5 as i used to be a parts delivery girl and still get discount so im going to go and pick it up later,i tell you who would of thought that small hole could of caused so much smoke LOL.Im assuming because of the whistling sound prior going away it was already damaged and it was going to go any day and i suppose towing the van at the weekend just put to much on it causing it to completely split.

Get some Duct tape (aka fabric tape, bodge tape) for emergency repairs of such items

Just what I have done Skynet, I have duct taped the long one on the front of the engine where it was rubbing against the screw underneath. Made a big difference and keep it in the car at all times.

Noted and shall be kept in car at all times,im sure there will be a multitude of uses for it,and before anyone anti Hippo says it,yes im sure it will also hold the doors on should they decide to fall off

At your leisure change the other one which comes from the intercooler as it's likely not to be too healthy either. There is a third one which goes from the turbo to the intercooler inlet & which isn't as prone to failure but worth keeping an eye on.

dunt ferget to cut yer old hose and part wrap around new one where it rubs on said screw

Funny you should mention the second one,when i went down to Barrets LR r Parts said the same thing,so i got that one too,cost £18 and will get that one put on too for peace of mind.

duct tape is only any good as an emergency repair. the heat of the engine bay melts the adhesive and makes a god awful mess. best bet to protect the hose it to cut a section out of the old one, slit it, then wrap it around the hose, secure with cable ties.

and try and clean out as much of the oily black ****e as you can. . . . .also check its not chaffing on the engine top cowell or any other sharp objects ,otherwise you'll be doing it again in a month

You are right guys and is something that I will deffo do (good advise there for you Murano) but more pressing problem of grinding IRD (i hope not major).

Excellent advice on the wrapping old pipe under the new one by the way someone should make it sticky because it is a big issue on Freelanders and comes up a lot!! oil on pipe work/ smoking etc which is all same cause.


I know someone on here put pictures on the likely causes of split\rubbing pipes and it is brilliant advice and is easy to fix.
