smoking

Help please

I have a 52 plate TD4 with a stage one chip on when towing and heavey accelration it pushes out a lot of black smoke from the exhaust.

firstly is this normal, will it do the car any harm.

I also read somewhere that something can be disconnected to stop it smoking.
