Hi there, I need your advice once again.
My problem is that on start up and on load (in gear) and just revving the engine my 90 seems to put a lot more black smoke out than it did before. I know diesels do smoke but mine was hardley noticable at all before. The problem started when me and a few mates went greenlaning around derbyshire, it was very rough terrain so there was a quite a lot of engine load as you would expect. Oh and also a friend of mine decided he would try to use his 200tdi defender as a pump:doh:! (He ended up picking the back of his engine up of the floor:() So I drew short straw and ended up towing him back (off road) which again was a heck of a lot of strain for my 19j td. When I got back the following day I noticed that it had started to blow out black smoke. (before i could see it in car lights at night but not in the day)
Ive alterd the pump, rotated it to adjust timing, oil seems to be ok, air filter new, fuel filter new (and had some Forte fuel treatment in when changed last week) I think fuel consumption has gone up a little, as far as I can tell the engine sounds normal, but Im unsure about turbos, I know that on acceleration it builds up a nice whistle but when i back off throttle to change gear I get what I can only describe as several ''wind down'' whistles, but as I said before I dont Know much about turbos and how they should sound:confused:. Any help would be great, Thanks In advance.

On start up the smoke is black, on acceleration its also black, but my mate says there is a slight hint of grey when I went to pick him up the other day. (I was going up quite a steep hill in 3rd gear high-ish revvs)

Might be worth checking out turbo pipes not collapsing? Did you get any overheating on your towing day?[ cyl. heads prone to cracking ]

Thanks for the replys.
Everything was fine, temp etc, I did have a quick look at the turbo but I wasnt sure what exactly to look for. Am I right in saying the only pipe that could collapse is the blue silcone pipe leaving the turbo-it seems slightly squashed on the elbow but for what I can see dosnt/hasnt collapsed. Should this be quite rigid if I was to squeeze it on the elbow?

If it's the pipe leaving leaving then the pressure will blow through it OK, although I would try and make the route a little easier for the pipe. It's normaly the induction pipes that cause a problem as the suction pulls the pipe together.

When you were towing did you use a lot of wide open throttle?

Well yes, especailly after his engine had a drink from the pond, I winched him out then towed him up-hill low box diff lock 1st/2nd gear (not too sure which) at full revvs because the ground was 6'' or so deep in mud on a fairly steep bank so I was struggling to keep traction (his landy must weigh 2tonne 1.6t for the landy and the rest for his collection of everything in the back!

Were you towing Ratty? :D

CharlseY is the expert on adjusting the injector pump, do a search in the freds. The pump I think will be delivering the same volume of fuel but air flow may be down. It may also be that the intercooler is covered in mud, blocking the cooling fins and making it inefective having the effect of reducing the air to fuel ratio giving a rich mixture. Same goes for the air filter. You don't say if you got yours in muddy water.

With regards to towing Ratty, I think I best not comment on thet one!:)
I will do some looking into the pump timing from CharlseY so thanks for that. And just for ruling out the injectors Ive also bought some injector nozzles.
With regards to the turbo making those wheezeing noises on deceleration, is this normal or is that goosed aswel?
And finally, why might heavy towing cause the engine to go ''off tune'' with the timing etc causing the smoke? Cheers folks.
