Hello, we have a 97/98 Defender 2.5 td. A while back the engine started over heating. The local Landrover "specialist" said that the engine required a head rebuild. The head was rebuilt and since then we have less power and the engine smokes badly under the smallest load.
Any suggestions on where to start with trying to sort this out would be most helpful.
I am not a mechanic but I do get my hands oily changing filters and stuff like that so I can get involved, but not too deep.
Thanks Tim.

head rebuild for a smoke issue is an odd diagnosis, what kind of smoke and does it breath heavy with filler cap off

Listen to motor with oil filler cap off and if you hear a "chuffing" then it is likely a piston has cracked and is allowing combustion gasses to pass into the sump.Gasses then escape via the breather and up the oil return ways into the rockerbox.

If the piston is cracked there will be less compression in one of the cylinders, correct? Can I test this with a compression test gauge?
