Hi All
Freelander 1 TD4 2006. Always started a bit rough in the morning with a cloud of white smoke, but after 5 - 10 seconds everything is good, I assumed maybe a sticking injector, but I can put up with that. Recently though I'm getting a misfire and a clanking nose around 2k to 2.5k rpm. It doesn't seem quite as bad when it's under load (accelerating) but if I'm just maintaining speed it seems worse.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated

May be two problems. Check crank pulley for metal filings and broken rubber layer between pulleys. Misfire may be seperate injector as you say. If you want to be scared stiff read my td4 broken crank thread! It started like yours sounds!!

I've got no noise when stationery, only get the noise when I rev engine to 2k plus rpm, so it misfires and I get the knock at the same time.

While driving it behaves perfectly providing I keep the revs below 2k rpm.

Do you think a leak back test would be advisable?

Is it a big job to check the crank pulley as you state above?

Thanks

I'd start with the pulley. Signs that the rubber has delaminated are flecks of metal dust floating around in the area of the pulley. Try a bright torch on it when getting dark outside. Also, remove tension of the belt and feel for free play in the outer sections of the pulley. To eliminate it, remove both belts and run engine without, this removes load on the pulley and should then be quiet. Note that my TD4 with the fractured crank failed this test so it may help you out !

Leak back would give you an indication of the injector condition but if you try to eliminate the rattle first then you'll see if the two things are linked. Good dose of a reputable injector cleaner may also help.

Right, so I've had a good look at the pulley. Rubbers between them look good, no signs of metal filings at all, both belts look in great condition, can't feel or see any play whatsoever with engine off and running.

As mentioned, everything runs great below 2k rpm, it's at that point that I get what feels like a misfire and a knocking noise, but I don't really want to drive everywhere at 45mph...

Mine's the same. Always has been, never cured it, never gets any worse. I just ignore it now, as it seems to be a common TD4 problem. It's known as the 2K misfire, which had been invested for a long time, by many owners.

The only common thing that appears to come up, is most 2K misfire engines have had an EGR delete fitted, so this could well be related?

Yeah, I can live with the misfire and the smokey start, just have to make sure no one is walking behind when I fire her up in the morning

Anyway, quick update, this morning I've taken the electrical connections off the injectors and fuel pressure regulator and given the a good clean and a dose of contact cleaning spray, put everything back together and off I went. 30 minutes later and no misfire or knocking noise as has been the case the last couple of days. When stationery I can still feel the slightest hesitation at 2k rpm but nothing after that whereas yesterday it was from 2k upwards with what was a bad misfire and a knock.

I'll eat my hat if that has resolved it as nothing is resolved that easily on a Freelander...

Let's see how it goes.

As always, all comments and help are greatly appreciated, muchos Gracias

It does indeed and it has the little fix to stop Daffy making an appearance every time the engine stops.

In all fairness though it's always had the 2k miss from the day I had it and the EGR valve was on then. It was also very clean when I took it off to replace with the bypass.

I had the misfire and white smoke on startup but not the 2K misfire on my 55 Auto. Managed to get a full set of injectors off eBay that had been tested and were all good. Fitted them yesterday and it's like a different car. No smoke, no misfire and much better performance. I did the leak off test and it was pretty inconclusive other then they all had excessive leak back so couldn't pin it to specific injectors. The worse bit was the prior week worrying about whether they'd come out. Checked the local Machine Mart to ensure they had the puller in stock etc. As it turned out with the engine hot and a piece of flat bar placed over the cam cover they simply levered out with a screwdriver. Job done in about 2 hours. I expect the IRD wil blow up next week to compensate but, for now, all is well.

Just a quick update, couple of weeks on and all is still well. Still got the smokey start and slight miss at 2k, but other than that all is good, for now!

Maybe it pays to just check the simple things first.

I had similar fault bit my misfire was at idle. So I took out my injectors and had them tested and two were faulty. Fitted two new ones and it's like a different car now. Money well spent.

I seem to remember on some vehicles can't remember which the Glo plugs continue to work even with engine running are all Your's working ok.
Just a thought as my 2006 smokes like hell on start up and misfires sleightly until warm it's also difficult to start first thing so I suspect theres only 1 glo plug working I have new ones to fit along with service and EGR bypass as I know the EGR can be a cause of lumpy smoky running.

I've no idea with regard to the glow plugs, mine starts fine and is only smokey and lumpy for about 5 seconds or so after starting (wish I could say the same about myself)! I'm getting confident with mine now, I'm even starting to put 20 quid of diesel in it at the garage instead of a fiver!!!
