Smoke problems on tick over and starting difficulties

Hi All
I have a old defender td its a bitch to start when cold and when it does it smokes really bad on tick over when you rev the landy up it clears it just seems to be on low to high tick over its white smoke, i have checked the turbo and thats fine i presume has its not plastered in oil its really clean around that area? someone told me the pump timing might be out? the landy still drives fine and pulls like a train with no power loss im just worried about my next mot. it might be a 300tdi engine swop time:decision:

white smoke is almost certainly the pump timing. Theres many threads about here that outline how to tweak it, itll make a big difference to starting, smoke and power.
