Smell coming from Landy after going uphill

Hi all,

I've got a funny smell coming into the cab of my T5 90 (1999) after going up any significant hill (only when the engine is warmed up). It's not an unpleasant smell,it's a bit like frankfurters...

Anyone know what it might be please?

If you're saying it's like a mild curry kinda smell it sounds like antifreeze.

Smell of burning crayons? Could be oil seeping out the rocker cover gasket and getting onto the exhaust manifold.

Clutch i would say
Either that or did you passenger sneak one out

Pig poo rolled to the rear and out through the rust holes in the floor and stuck to the hot eggsource?

How can I tell if it's the clutch?

Put on the handbrake on well, put it in gear and slowly lift the clutch

It should stall, but if it doesn't...


Alternatively driving along at about 30, pout it in 4th and floor the throttle - does the engine speed up without an increase in road speed?

Are you losing any coolant?

Its OK just open the window the smell will soon go! Open vent for faster relief

Have you got enough oil in lol run mine quite low and was getting a nasty smell when engine was been worked hard

First things first check your coolant level. Don't just look from the outside, remove the cap and see if the coolant level rises or falls.

I get a burning smell in mine too when running it uphill under load. Thought it was gearbox oil needed topping up to be honest, still haven't been under it to check but i also haven't driven it either.

I'd did the clutch test and both were fine.

I did have a leak from my gearbox and it hasn't been topped up for ages so maybe that's it....

I haven't checked my gearbox or transfer box in a while but it went in for rear crank seal and they made a horrible job so i really need to check to see if its whats causing my smell. Might be the same for you if you haven't checked it.
Im at work for the next 9 days so a week this friday ill be checking mine.
