Small housing on dashboard.

2006 TD4.
Looking for somewhere to house a small digital display for an external thermometer I spotted this space on the dashboard panel, to the right and below the steering column. It had a black ABS moulding (which I prised off) buttoned into another ABS moulding crudely screwed onto the dashboard.
I'm a bit slow but what was it for? By the bodge-factor of the fitting perhaps there was something the previous owner has there.
I've screwed a strip of black PVC there temporarily.

Mine has a rubber storage tray there. Don't think LR ever put anything else there.

On a facelift it's where the rear park sensor and cruise control switches are fitted

Like Hippo's mine as a rubber matted storage area.... ideal for my phone

have got all the switches in it now and installed, bought the oem Land Rover wiring loom , was all plug and play

Thank you all, so it was switches then. I'll go ahead and mount the little display there then and perhaps I can squeeze in a phone holder.
