Was the belt overdue being replaced or was it just an unlucky failure? I've gotta change both belts on my L series. It's a pig of a job to change the main belt and the pump belt sounds like its a sod to get the timing straight again. Fear I might have to phone the garage. :(
 
You're right MHM. My question was really exploring how risky is it to leave the belts past the 'change' interval. I have inspected them and they look okay. No wear and no damage. At the end of the day its toothed belt and regardless of engine type most engines don't appreciate a breakage. 200TDi or L series :(

I've seen belts snap pretty much on the mileage. I've seen em do double what they're meant to do. As it was an exceptionally cold winter this year I'd be wanting to get it done ASAP to be honest.

If its any consolation D71, what I saw was a mightmare event that could happen to any one of us, nothing you could have done to prevent it, and a bunch of Land rover enthusiasts helping a mate in trouble. Didn't see it as anything more than that.

Hope you're back on the road (and off it :D) soon.
