This is my firs Disco and just thought that they were sluggish until 2000rpm or so. To the point where nipping out of a junction would leave you with second thoughts.

However, playing with the H - N - L transfer at very low speeds (trying to find CDL which it doesn't have) I put her back in High to carry on my journey on the road to find her very responsive and pulling away from a start with great response through the gears. However as time has gone on, I find her sluggish again and only wants to pull from just under 2000rpm. Once she is over that rpm there seems to be no problem. Its just low speed power she short on. That is until I played with the H -N -L that time.

Was this significant? I know she has more as I felt it but she's slipped back into sluggish mode.

Any ideas?

Matt

I understand that this will enhance what is already there, but after putting the Disco back in High ratio, she pulled away very smartly and continued to do this for a few trips. She has now gone back to being sluggish.

What I am really after is to a possible reason for this as the power etcd is obviously there but not all the time.

Regards, Matt

start with the simple things, check......MAF/MAP sensors, EGR valve, throttle position sensor..........taking into account that it's a now and then behaviour

Thanks Sierrafery

Can you tell me what the MAF/MAP Sensors; EGR Valve and the other suggestions that you mention are. I would be happy to check them but I don't know what they are.

I have a workshop manual but it doesn't seem all that clever at giving you this sort of information.

Thanks, Matt

MAF=mass air flow, MAP=manifold absolute pressure, EGR=exhaust gas recirculation.

take the manual and do some reading then........(it seems that u have to learn a bit:))

Open ''engine management"> component location(engine compartment) and u'll find MAP and MAF.......read operation......

Check "emission controll" > EGR.

for cleaning them search threads....must be lots

Learn a bit, looks like loads :)

I'll read up and keep searching the forums. Feel like I have learnt loads already thanks to you and the guys on this forum.

Reading all the threads so far and even though the service manual states that she has had a service, I think that I'll spend some time going through servicing her, so I know that its done. If I still get issues after this I'll dig deeper and search harder. Giving her a service will at least get me on a level playing field as so much seems to be linked to so many other things; so back to basics I guess.

Thanks Guys for all your help.

Hi there,

Discovery 2's alter the accelerator pedal 'feel' when in low box compared to high. This is to enable better control when moving over rough terrain and your foot may be bouncing up and down on the pedal.

Someone wiser than I may be able to tell you why your getting the effect you are.

Absolutely the right approach Matt, establish a baseline of service, from which you can work through all the issues.

Have be re-reading this thread and no-one to date seems to have asked why the performance should change after operating the transfer case hi-lo lever? I know that there is a switch on the trans box and contact with the ECU for switching between fuelling maps for high and low range, so I'm just wondering whether the switch is mal-adjusted or not working correctly.

Good luck

Dave

Ps Is it auto or manual gearbox? Might be an idea to put it in your siggy.

I'll look at the fuel mapping following the service if not cured.

She is a manual

And I'll look at updating my signature to keep all important info together to save anyone guessing.

Cheers guys, Matt

The service is done and it would appear that the fuel filter had been giving the Disco the problems. The service book stamp suggests that this had been done, but along with the AirCon it seems that it wasn't. The transfer box oil level was a little low too.

I'll be looking to check the other bits now that you guys have suggested to make sure they are clean and working correctly.

Slowly, Slowly catchy monkey!

Cheers guys, Matt

Sticking EGR valves can be a problem as well. Before going the remap route, get an EGR kit for your TD5 and a set of silicon hoses while you are doing it.

Another possibility is a bad cat. Consider fitiing a decat if you havn't already got one fitted.

You may also find the engine has had some surgery at some point. Generally speaking, a head which has had a skim won't give you the same power as one which hasn't. If you've already found that work has been invoiced but not done, I suspect there may be other hidden problems. It appears to be the way it is among certain 'Land Rover Specialists' unfortunately.

you can end up changing numerous parts to cure this...I did & it cost some to no avail...be wise about how you solve it otherwise youll throw money away unnecessarily...a remap sorted mine...if you have a standard vehicle it will be an amazing difference in performance.
If equipped like mine which adds weight (lots) & changes gearing with larger tyres, then the difference will be less but youll still get better mpg results.
