I've never driven another disco so I have nothing to compare it to directly, but my 300tdi seems overly sluggish at low revs. Pulling away from standstill always seems like a huge effort and when I put my foot down the revs creep up very slowly and it only starts to move once past about 2000revs and you can hear the turbo kicking in.

I have recently replaced engine oil, air filter, oil filter and lift pump. I've also tried running from a separate tank of diesel with a length of new fuel line so that crosses off the tank/sedimentor/pipe/sender off the suspect list.

I know it is a heavy car and the problem is not so bad that it stops me from being able to use it, but it just feels so gutless when pulling away and going up hills. I'd love to be able to put my foot down and there to be some more power there.

Is it normal for a disco to be this slow? Can anyone suggest other things that I have not checked that might be causing the problem ? Do I need to start playing with the adjustment screws on the injector pump?
 
No, they're slow compared to 'normal' cars, but not what I'd call sluggish.

Wherabouts are you, town is close enough, someone might be able to try yours and you try theirs to get a comparison?
 
From what your describing I would say thats normal....Mine is auto and unless foot is flat to the floor it takes an age to get to 30mph but hey don't you enjoy seeing boy racers trying to get by you :)
Mine only has 44k on clock and all nicely serviced so can't see it being anything other than the fact your pulling 2 tonne of a start line :)
 
I would try injector cleaner and new fuel filter before playing with the pump-I run my 300tdi on biodiesel(known injector cleaner) and its improving all the time,has real grunt,will beat small cars away from the lights and has enough oomph for overtaking-cruises at 70 on mways with power to spare
 
Thing is . the OP (Dom) doesn't have a 'feel' for what a Disco should be like. If he's come from a reasonable modern 'normal' car then i guess sluggish might be 'normal' for a Landy. I think he's better off getting a comparison first ...

Then make sure the engine and everything's working fine, properly serviced for instance ...

Then work on improvements ...

If his engine does have an issue then upgrading and stuff to 'improve' it might actually feck the engine up big-style. Admittedly I can't see injector cleaner being much of a problem thobut .. but it's also why I haven't mentioned egr, de-cat, straight-through exhaust etc yet ... ;)
 
I came from a normal car (Volvo t4) to my recent landy and the RR I had previously was a 4.6 and had quite a bit of poke.

I find my disco is quite good from standstill (even managed to embarrass a Skoda octavia doozil the other day) although initial pick up is quite slow with it being an auto once it bites it is pretty good.

I would tend to agree with biolandy and the fuel treatment route if there is no one locally you can compare to.

Before you start messing with the pump it could be worth cleaning out the intercooler, blanking the egr and a decat (all pretty cheap jobs) and then adjust the pump after.
 
Egr is already blanked, one of the first things I did! De-cat seems like a lot of effort, Would the intercooler make any difference when the car is first started and the engine is still cold?
 
Mine was very sluggish, discovered a split in the intercooler hose, replaced that, went like the clappers after (comparitively anyway). Injector cleaner helped too.

With all of the TDi 300's we've have there is std procedure for me as soon as I get a new one:

1. Full service, all oils, all filters;

2. De-EGR - makes a small amount of improvement;

3. De-Catt - using a Defender down-pipe costs about £20 and makes quite a big difference, especially on autos. Best single mod you can do - value for money can't be beat !!!

4. Check all tyre pressures and set to 32psi front; 36psi rear;

5. Take off the viscous fan - you need to check to ensure the cooling system is all working properly, good quality fresh anti freeze etc. to do this, but taking the fan off improves mpg and slight perf improvement plus the engine is quieter. Not recommended if you spend all day in traffic queues.

All the mods have a cumulative effect such that when you're done, a Disco TDi 300 manual or auto, runs really quite well. My last TDi 300auto did 16,000mls with me and averaged 33mpg over that period.
 
hi mine was very sluggish and noticed it smokes alot when started from cold i changed the glow plugs and found oil had seeped down and contaminated the glow plug and at the same time i cleaned out the intercooler and inlet manifold with parrafin. whilst these were sat in cleaner i also fitted a de-cat pipe and all i can say is what a difference all worth the effort to do.to be honest it was all easy to do and if you get stuck you can always jump on here and find the answer:D

Do you find in summer (as french summers can be hot) that you have to put the viscous fan back on,or do you leave it off all year/or have you fitted an electric fan.
