Hi, Bought a 300 disco.. (m reg, auto) and it seems really slow on the take off.. Is this normal? and is there a chip that can be fitted to stop this? if so what sort of price range?

Thanks

i got the 3.5 v8, and seems to be atlest 3 or 4 seconds between booting it and the engine dropping down and goin off. could just be somethin daft like needing an oil change or something, so would also be interested to know

There was a delay on my 3.5 of a few seconds, but the 3.9 the delay is now is about a second this is perhaps due to a faster processor within the engine ECU.

Slow is an comparative word, slow by comarison to what? If this is your first auto Disco then maybe you hadn't appreciated the low power/weight ratio = 111bhp/2100kgs, does not make for a rocketship.

Try giving it a bit more pedal than you otherwise would and see if it takes off any better.

would an increased flow exhaust make any difference? or is it all in the ecu? if so will a remap help

My manual 300 Tdi benefitted greatly from a de-cat front and straight through (replacing middle silencer) exhaust.

300tdi have mechanical injection pumps only electronics were for the fly by wire throttle but at that it's just a stepper motor on standard pump more or less, and most of them have an EGR control system which is sometimes confused as being some sort of EDC/ECU.

Just for your general info, Tdi 300 auto from about '95 iirc, had a full engine ECU using crank sensors, a MAF, coolant temp sensor and a fly-by-wire throttle.

The injection pumps are completely different models.

A different exhaust will certantly make the engine more responsive and yes a remap will help but I'm unsure if the ecu can be remapped in the modern sence of the word ie. plugging in a laptop and running the vehicle on a rolling road and altering the tune.
I think it's a 3.5 thing my 3.5RR was nippy and I lived with the delay which was not that long until a 3.9RR kicked down passed me going up a hill :D

A bit off topic but I assume we are still talking about you disco and not about the original posters Tdi :D

Both i think! Any way to give the auto's a helping hand on kickdown is always useful, it imagine many things will help both the OPs tdi and a V8

I don't think anyone driving a Tdi would not notice a delay in kick down, it happens when it happens unless you can get the turbo spinning. Personaly I don't think there's anything wrong with your kick down "they all do the sir" :D

Ive got a 94 auto without the edc.Mine was really slow at first especially when cold in winter. Now Im really pleased with it .You need to do all the simple mods to get it running right.Do a search , loads on here.

When I first had mine I thought it was slow...this was before I learnt to service it myself, so when it was in for a service I got the garage to check everything and take it for a test drive...their verdict was that it there was nothing wrong with it and it was better than a lot they have seen.
I remember a discussion on another forum where someone was saying that 300TDIs are so slow taking off that they are dangerous at busy roundabouts, that's rubbish..if its that slow somethings wrong with it.

300tdi Fitted a new set of injectors, full size allisport intercooler, tweaked the pump a little and have a straight through no box exhaust, made a massive difference, had my mates V8 off the line by a good car length and blew him away on the motorway. Did it all cuz i had 33's on and it made 5th gear redundant and wouldnt pull u outta bed, now the mid range power is awesome, got 5th back with a vengence, it now accelerates in 5th up hill!!. If u got a few quid to throw at it or do alot of towing or got big wheels its well reccommended.

Yes, if I had the money I would go for the bigger intercooler and fip tweak, but to help with towing up hills more than for helping with take off from a standing start..I guess I should get around to replacing my top exhaust pipe with a non-cat one...I can afford that :)

Thanks for all the replys, its my first discovery.. before i had a 3.9 v8 range rover and a p38 2.5 bmw diesel.. nowt but probs with the p38 so thats why i got the disco.. Im gonna take it in to the garage for a check up I think.. I mainly need it to tow my caravan to need it to be in good running order
