Hi all, as soon as this cold weather arrived i am suddenly having problems starting my Disco. It started about 4 days ago when it was quite cold and it took a few more seconds to start that usual and then on the next day it took longer still and again on the third. today the 4th day it took about 4/5 attempts to start. the car is turning over fine but not firing. i thought it was the glow plugs but now im not sure, could it be the injectors? help!

Glow plugs first they are cheap. Type in hard starting discovery on google and you will get the facts

ok, good place to start. will have a look. i have seen posts on here saying that glow plugs arent neccessary in the uk and it should start without them which is where my doubt comes in.

Thats rubbish just read the search. It takes 1850 degrees F to fire a motor and a cold motor needs help. Mine cycle every time it starts

that's very true, for a diesel with plenty of compression

a tired one will struggle without plugs

glow plugs shouldnt be necessary ,putting a piece of clear plastic pipe in between filter and front banjo bolt on pump will allow you to see if theres air in system ,engine can seem to be turning over fast enough but maybe not quite ,low compression was normal answer but 300s are normally pretty good

easy to test the glow plugs with jump leads and a battry
ive had a fair few diesels and in cold weather if even one fails it can be a bugger to start
but i would also check all cables on battry conections on glow plugs , may be worth clamping jump lead os a extra earth from batt to engine , also get the battry drop tested as it may have a dodgy plate and not have quite enough omph for turning engine after its cycled the glows

ok so the latest developement is that the car wont start at all. i got in it this morning and it wont even turn over. i initially tried to jump start it with a mates car ut his dodnt work either and it took me while to realise that the battery is fine. All electrics work fine and the headlights work with no fade. is it the starter motor or any other ideas?

hold the phones, i have just fixed the problem, with a hammer. i found the starter motor and beat it and hey presto starts just fine. cheers for all the tips though. does this mean i need a new sarter motor now?

would say starter motor is fine :) sounds like Sticky solenoid should be fine now or strip it down and give it a good clean
