sloppy gearstick

hi all ive got a freelander 1999 diesel which has a very floppy gearstick you can get the gears but once engaged you can still move the gearstick from left to right by about 8 to 10 inchs it is the same in any gear does anyone have any ideas?????

Sure you dont mean 8-10 mm/cm.Mine flopps about 4inches ,used to **** me off but now I wouldnt have it any other way.

no it is about 8 to 10 inchs if it went any further i'd say it was about to fall out

gear linkage is absolutely fooked. i'd get it sorted before you end up with a gearstick in your hand and no way of moving the car

somewhere between the gearstick and the box

never had to have one apart but it may pay ya to peel the gaiter back and have a quick squint in there. my old freelander didn't have 10" of cross travel in neutral never mind in gear

Just below the gearstick under the vehicle I cant remember if theres anything to see if you lift the gaiter.
