Just curious - does anyone know if this problem is more common to earlier motors, or is it similar across the whole range? Did LR ever modify the casting process to eliminate the problem? Anyone here with a very later P38 which suffered slipped liners?

Hi.

Not an expert however....i never heard of a slipped liner before the P38, all anybody said was great engine, tendency to overheat, check the coolant regularly. Friend of mine was very much into racing, (will post a picture) and we wondered as the skirts on the pistons were smaller and the throw of the crank was bigger on the later engines that maybe it had somehow made the movement of the piston less smooth in the bore which led to the slipped liner.

Just a thought..........

Cheers, Nick,

i think it happens right across the range, but sying that ive only heard it happen a few times from 99 onwards,so maybe bmw put a better quality control on them, but my belief is how well you look after it,but at the end of the day if it,s going to go then not much you can do about it except fix it
