Hello all,

I've got a bit of a problem with my 2002 TD4 Freelander and I'm here looking for help.

I've got a slight but regular loss of power, a bridling you might say, with my 2002 TD4 manual transmission. I've read the posts where the MAF seems to be the problem, and recently I had mine changed but to no effect. This has been happening for close to two years. In April of 2018 I had the oil and all filters (air, oil, fuel and turbo) changed for a vehicle inspection so I don't think any serviceable parts are the problem. (The timing of the power loss and the parts replacement are probably a coincidence, I don't think the two are events are related).

I live on a hill, and every single time I get to a certain tree, about 150 m from the bottom, halfway up the hill, I get a slight drop in power and it stays that way until I get home, about 50 m past the top of the hill. No smoke, no lights on the dash, no funny noises. But I can't accelerate.

It so happens that I've had an air hose go out on me on two different occasions during this period. During the time it took me to replace them I would get a whooshing noise from the motor but the engine wouldn't bridle. There was maybe a slight overall loss of power but no bridling. Then as soon as the air hose is replaced, the engine perks up but resumes bridling as before.

To me this points to a breathing problem, and is what led me to replace the MAF even though it looked clean (looking at the motor from the front it's located more or less at the left-front corner of the block, am I right). I'm wondering now if might be turbo-related, but when the motor is being bridled it doesn't feel like it's under-powered, because the motor doesn't seem to be straining, if that makes any sense at all. It just won't accelerate. I saw Kungfu's post of May 2009 and it seems interesting but his symptoms don't quite match mine.

Prior to my local garage replacing the MAF there had been error messages and afterward there weren't any, so we had been optimistic that the problem had been solved but no dice. So now I'm here.

If I've missed any threads that sound promising I'd be happy to hear about it. Otherwise, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance, any and all comment welcome.
