Do you mean the 'sun roof' ? if so, just leave it closed (if that is possible) and disconnect the switch, you can get a repair kit on ebay for a few quid but it is a nightmare to fix.
I think 90% of freelanders have them shut and disconnected.
5 grand to replace is raking the P!SS ! it really is - I trust you never go anywhere near the place again - , you could buy several freelanders for that, possibly even 10 ...
It would still cost a fortune for a paid repair though as the labour and time is not worth thinking about - major job !.
Makes me shudder..
Just close it and get the aircon on..

And a new roof is about £600 plus fitting so where 5k came from who knows!!!
