I only had my 98' 300 tdi auto 3 days and then driving on the back country roads on Thursday, going around a bend slowly ( and I mean slowly ) I hit some sheet ice and the disco just went !! straight into a hedge and half way into a field. A kind farmer neighbour of mine came and pulled my out after another discovery and a 4x4 with a winch failed...

Anyway, my garage friend has checked the landy out and nothing is damaged, broken or knackered... HURRAY for the trusty disco !

Anyway.. I was on the way to replace my nearside front tyre as it was pretty poor..

I had a nissan patrol before and NEVER skidded drastically on the ice.. is this just bad luck or should I be either doing something different with the disco or simply putting special tyres on..

It doesn't matter what your driving if the traction isn't there to be had in the first place.

I was ski-ing in my truck last night (first gear tickover down a steep sheet ice slope). All you can do is keep your feet off the pedals to allow the wheels to keep turning and steer yourself GENTLY outta trouble.

Hairy muff but you were going down a "steep sheet ice slope",,, he was going round a bend...Very slowly...

Yep. But if you over steer on ice you'll actually go the opposite way to where you want to be going. If I'm on ice I'll always try and stay as close to the bank as possible. That gives me less distance to slide and means any impact will be reduced. Sometimes you can simply use the verge to get you around the corner and out of danger. Unfortunately every road is different and you have to do your best to read each road before you get into trouble. The worst thing you can do on ice is panic . As soon as you feel your vehicle go all you can do is let it ride.

Fook knows,,,,, I just cant get me heed round that he was going very slow round a bend and end'd up going through a hedge and half way into a field,,,,,,,, (a fink e is telling porkies),,,,:scratching_chin:
 
Check your brake pad integrity-mine used to skate as soon as I touched brake pedal in ice-one of the pads had delaminated and was snatching-didn't show up on regular driving-you do seem to have gone a long way,for travelling so slow.
 
Thanks for the comments although I joined this forum to get advice not people telling me I was telling porkies..

I was going slowly and it was a right hand sloping bend which also right to left camber and is slightly down hill.. the same bend has seen 5 cars go through it in the last 12 months.. so if you dont mind if you dont have anything useful to say dont answer the question

Thanks for the advice about the brakes/diff lock.. I have no idea about either.. as I said it was the first time I had driven it since buying it

I am booking it in for a good service and check over next week so I will mention all the sensible suggestions made ...

Well, you had better find out damned quick how to be sure it is NOT in Centre Diff Lock or you'll be spending loads of cash on tyres, propshaft UJs, and fixing fences.

NEVER lock the centre diff when on a road, especially if the road is icy.
 
I agree.. goping too fast for sure.. go as slow as you can.. no brakes, use the gears...oh and slow down before corners
 
Couple of things on this, I don't know how used to auto's you are? but remember that on the Disco auto you can change down the auto box to control your speed. I have had a similar sounding slide during our latest batch of ice while doing 10mph so i slid the box down into 1st gear which sufficiently slowed me while I steered to the left hand verge using that to then take me round the bend. You can blip the throttle while doing this which will increase your tyre speed and regain traction.

If so many cars have gone off this bend over the last year then why had you not changed down and crawled round the bend?

I am intrigued why a winch equipped vehicle couldn't pull you out? Sounds like he needs training!!
 
Sorry reading this reminded me of my Mrs in our Rangie a while back. I came home from work for her to say, "I nearly had an accident today, the car slid into the road at the junction!!"
"Did it? how it has never done it on me!! how fast were you going?"
Only about 40 :D:D:D:D:D
