Hi All,
I wonder if anyone could help me please ?
I’ve been trailing thro the site threads to find some info about the clutch slave cylinder on my 1.8K FL1. I have the age old problem of difficulty engaging gears when it’s hot, & after trying several suggestions, & ideas of my own, I’m back to extending the rod on the slave cylinder to just get a bit more push from the pedal.
I seem to think that member andyfreelandy did extend it, but mentioned about 4mm ? I was thinking of more like an inch to give it more push & as I have a spare slave rod I was going to cut a piece off that to extend the original & use a piece of 10mm copper pipe as a sleeve to hold the two together. - Similar to Andy's idea.
Andy, if you’re reading this, did you extend the rod at the slave or the master cylinder, & does anyone think my idea would work or is 1 inch too much ?
Thanks in advance & Rgds Tom.

Hello, mine was a TD4 master. 4 to 6 mm at the master is about 50mm at the pedal so be careful with your 1 inch!!

I simply cut the master pushrod, threaded and added a threaded sleeve.
I had previously calculated that LR got the volume wrong and I was simply correcting it.

Never had the problem with a 1.8. Check the bracket isn't bending. Check the clutch arm isn't stuck or seized.
I'm not sure that you've found the root cause yet.

Thanks Andy, so if I go with the inch (25mm) at the slave it would be less than 4mm at the master ?
It has a new bracket, new master & slave (as you will know they come as a couple) & the arm is free. It’s fine when the weather is cold it’s just when it’s hot weather, if it gets really hot when I’m out & about I have to turn the engine off to get it in gear when stationary, & I have to get it out of gear before I stop or I have to hold it on the brake. I think it’s the cheapish new master & slave that I bought on line ( from a reputable supplier I might add. ) the plastic must suffer in the extreme heat. it’ll probably be ok now until next year ( unless if we have an Indian summer - we wish ! ) But the car is surplus at the minute so I thought I’d make use of this time to try to fix the problem, rather than keep living with it.
I’ve tried to shield the slave cylinder from the exhaust manifold heat & ducted some cooler air onto the master & pipework, but although it isn’t as bad it still does it. It’s ok in autumn/ winter / spring when the engine’s hot, It’s the hot ambient OAT in summer that causes it. I’ll keep fiddling & see if I can fettle it. Thanks anyway T.

Thanks Nodge 68 & Andyfreelandy I’ll have a look at the master push rod.
The hydraulics I bought a while ago now, weren’t particularly cheap & were from a reputable supplier, so I’d rather fix them than buy another unknown that might still give me the problem, sadly the car isn’t worth a great deal now so spending a small fortune on it isn’t an option.
Thanks for all the comments though, & I’ll let you know
