Slave cylinder out of position

Just swapped engines on my S2A, but the clutch slave cylinder is sitting pushed back from the bell housing a few centimetres, and seems completely stuck. Is it supposed to have this degree of freedom with the bell house bolts out, or is something bent out of shape?

Slave looks new, is it the same one that was there with previous engine ?
Has it just become jammed as you fitted the new motor.
 
Is the engine sitting correctly on the engine mountings , cylinder bracket looks as if turned is lower fixing hole in same plane as top one?
 
Same cylinder as with previous engine and new engine mounted correctly. I think the slave assembly has been banged around when I was wrestling with the mating of engine and gear box. I bled the cylinder, which loosened everything up a bit, and got the assembly unstuck with a crow bar. It still won’t go to the right position, though, so something is probably bent.
Is it possible to remove the entire slave cylinder assembly, including the connecting tube to the clutch withdrawal unit, without separating the engine from the gearbox?

bracket isnt secured to the bell housing studs

The bracket is held on( or should be) by a couple of the studs that hold the gearbox on, just undo them to remove the bracket.

Yes, that’s the problem. I can’t get it to the right position and secure it to the bell house studs. Question is why.

The bracket is off, but since something is preventing it from getting back on, I thought I’d remove the whole assembly to check if the bracket, lever, connecting tube or something else is bent out of shape.

you will have to remove the slave and connections to release bearing or pivot points then fit bracket
 
Sorted. The lowest of the three bell housing studs was pinning the bracket back as far as the assembly would go. The ball joint on the rod to the clutch withdrawal took up most of the movement, the rest was taken up by the bracket itself, which warped a small amount. Removing the slave and disconnecting the ball joint loosened everything up to where the bracket could be slid into position.
Relieved that the engine could be left in place! Thanks all.
