Got a hurendous case of drive slack, all the UJs are fine, i have no idea wher its coming from. Jolts back and forth if its driven with no pressure to the drive fron the engine, and klangs on gear changes. Genrally ruins the car makes it no fun to drive.

Discojamz suggested it may be the A-fraim ball joint, how would i go about checking that? Got any other ideas?

Cheers, Rich.

get someone in it and rock it on the clutch while you have a look at the ball joint soo if its moving. or get underneath with a big pry bar and see they way.
or lift a back wheel with it in gear and rock the wheel forward and back. you should see/hear if its gone.

yeah. You should be able to trace the slackness. Put the handbrake on, chock all wheels really well, raise a rear wheel, see how much i turns. If a lot, the slack is in the UJs or diff, but you can see all the bits moving so it ahould be easy to see where the slack is. If there isn't any, do the same to a front wheel. You can follow the movement right to the static point, which is the locked rear prop, and see if the main part of movement is, halfshafts, diff, UJ or Transfer box. MAKE SURE YOU CHOCK THE WHEELS REALLY WELL THOUGH!!!

It could be your splines on your props, I have this problem right now, I can turn the two halves about 1/4 of an inch independently of each other, its causing exactly the same problems.

In that case change em quick as the splines are less than 1/4" wide so if you can turn them more than 1/4" then in theory you have no splines left, just a smooth pole within a smooth pole, so unless yer transfer box is stuck on diff lock, not too sure how you're getting anywhere!!!

A knackered a-frame ball joint won't cause slack in the drivetrain just lots of clonking etc. If it's not your propshafts it could wel be worn splines in your gearbox or transfer box or very worn diffs and/or halfshafts.

Found some slack. Ive got about 50-60 degrees slack on one wheel if i jack up one corner and spin it whilst in gear with the diff lock out.

Whilst overtightening a buggered wheel bearing on the back, i found the splines on my rear drive flanges are about the same size as needles, both the back are the same, probaly acounts for about 5-10 degrees together. I will probaly change the rear half shafts too, theres probaly some worn splines at the other end too.

Slack to that extent is quite normal, you have the slack from both wheels, both sides of the transfer box, both diffs, any slack from 3 UJs (presuming you checked your UJs with the HANDBRAKE OFF), there is always a bit - see if you can trace it by getting someone else to turn the wheel and see which joints have te most difference in movement either side of them while you look at it from underneath with a torch.

They are sort of rounded, perhaps the 1/4inch thing was a bit of exageration, but if you hold the two halves you can get it to move a fair bit.

24 spline shafts and flanges do have a habit of wearing out quicker than the older 10 spline stuff. seen plenty of 300 discos with stripped shaft splines.
one of those things!
