Oh yes!!!

I remember getting all excited about the army run Goodyear G90 tyres back in the early 2000s until i had a set and on the first rainy day nearly totalled my Series, got rid of them in favour of Grabber mt radials, far superior in every way and didn't invoke fear of the combination of rain and roundabouts lol :)

The g90 are worse than the zxl tbh, I have driven both, I actually think the Zxl is fine if you don’t drive your defender like a race car.

They are quite good off road - as you have seen :)

I've had really bad experiences with remoulds in the past but I know that they are a lot better these days.
Curious but what sort of experiences? I know people who have been running them for 30 years and various different brands and treads. I don’t know of a single issue tbh. And we are probably talking hundreds of tyres. Have 4 or 5 sets at the moment.

I can't really comment on the processing but I know that retreads are different from remoulds and that all modern remanufactured tyres are indeed remoulded carcasses.

I was overtaken by a tread band on the A140 by Wymondham from a set of Colways back in the late 90s, both the front tyre treads had delaminated from the carcasses and one passed me and the other was almost off on the inside when I slowed to a stop. I also had horrific wear from a set of Greenways could be Camac?, 10,000 miles over 3yrs and they were wore out, last set I tried was a set of BlackStar remoulds and they wouldn't balance for love nor money and even with 150g of BBs in there I couldn't get over 45mph without it becoming a bone shaker, just my own personal experience of them. I haven't tried anything in over 15yrs now and I'm told that they are much much better.

Not heard of them. Linky?

Those Renegade R7s look the bomb, see how long these GT radials last and I might get a set to replace them.

Similar. I have used lots, never had a problem.

I hope not, and you will prolong their life if you can protect them from sunlight as much as possible.

Does raise another serious point, though. Always makes me laugh to see posts on LZ recommending that people only buy premium tyres, even when the OP has already said the vehicle only does 2000 miles a year as an occasional toy.
So if they follow that advice, they are going to spend over a hundred quid each on tyres which will perish long before they wear out! o_O

Me, I would get remoulds where possible on an older Land Rover.

Remoulds tend to perish faster, especially on a vehicle that sits around for a vast proportion of the time i.e one doing very minimal mileage.

When I bought my coopers, I originally wanted the insa turbo dakar remoulds because I love the look of the old bfg mud terrains, however, I purchased the brand new coopers for £5 more per corner than the remoulds, and I at least know they'll last longer than the remoulds.

I also had a pair of insa's on my series 3 that does under 1k a year, and they have perished terribly. For me, with such a small price difference it was a no brainer to go for the coopers

Have to say, that has not been my experience.
The Insa Dakars that I put on my Ninety in 2010 are still going strong, covered about 25k, and probably 2/3 worn by now.
Replacing them won't be my problem, as I have given the vehicle to my ex wife. Although come to think of it, I left a set of new Toyo ATs in the shed which should do it for a few years.
As far as I can remember, I have always used remoulds on all my landrovers, except my V8 D2, and I had a set of military bar grip tyres on my 109 when I was on forestry work. I usually buy new midrange tyres for my cars, because they go fast on motorways for long periods of time.

It hasn't been my experience that remoulds are similarly priced to new tyres either. I paid about £50 each for the Insas, although that was a while back. The most recent set of remoulds that I bought was a set of Fedima Maxima, they were about £75 each, but they are a massive tyre.

Times have certainly changed then, have a quick Google of the price of Insa's now, like a say, there was a fiver in it per corner so no way was I going to worry about it. A new tyre like coopers offering (the stt Pro) are just head and shoulders above and being a new tyre was a no brainer to go for them. I'd defo still buy remoulds if I wanted specific dedicated aggressive off road, but apart from that for peace of mind I'd personally rather go for a good make, I use mine ont road, motorway, byway, forest and I need thdat reliability that a new tyre gives me. The remoulds seems to be a softer compound and certainly does corrode faster

Could be a factor of purchasing methods as well, I didn't Google them then, I bought them from a local tyre shop, who knew me well, and valued my business, I had three vehicles, three trailers, a tractor, muckspreader, and other stuff with tyres, so I was a good customer.

Also worth bearing in mind that tyre life is a factor of usage, and how the tyres are kept. Sunlight deteriorates tyres, and most of my vehicles were kept inside when not in use, and having a number of vehicles to choose from meant that I would usually use the tractor when conditions were very severe.

Oh absolutely I agree, my series was kept outside all the time and that was the major factor in perishing tyres.

I don't use Google either for tyre purchases, I also use a local tyre fitter, I think its highly important to get a good rapor with an individual and you then gain respect and in turn will get much better service, in my experience! I only meant have a quick Google to check out insa's prices now, you may be surprised at how comparible they are to grabbers or coopers!

Prices of all tyres have gone up stupid over the last decade or so. We were told it was due to rising crude and raw material prices, but now the crude price has plummeted, I can't say I have noticed much reduction in tyre prices! o_O

Disposal costs have gone up a lot as well, but I used to get round that by taking the old ones away with me, and using them to hold the nets down on silage piles.
I still take the old ones for my car away now, but these days I use them for extra fenders on the jetty where I moor.

Doubt you’d get STT Pros for similar money to remoulds. I agree the price on most remoulds has gone up. Although some bands/sizes are still pretty cheap. Set of Kingpin 7.50’s are sub £80/corner. And new tyre will be triple figures.

I'm not entirely sure why you'd doubt what I specifically stated, the entire reason for me getting the coopers was because there was sod all difference in price between the Dakar, the Dakar were my original choice and line of enquiry, but I ended up with coopers solely because of the price

Just for the sake of proving my point, my invoice:

For the small discrepancy in price Cooper gets my vote, and I'll be getting them again when I next need to. Absolutely faultless tyre, and I've really put them through their paces
