Hi all,

I'm planning to rebuild a front diff off a Defender, but fit a LS Ashcroft's core in. Previous owner thought it would be a good idea to pack the axle with grease (or maybe it's just ancient oil?) and as a result, three bearings were in bits. The casing and crownwheel look good, but I wanted some opinions on the state of the pinion. At first glance it looks fine but on closer inspection you can see some uneven wear on the teeth. I hope it's visible in the attached pictures. I would love to just fit HD pinion and crownwheel from Ashcroft's, but I couldn't justify the total cost to myself, so I would like to stick with these if possible.

Ive got ashcrofts lsd diffs, no way id fit a new lsd & refit that old pinion. Fit a new pinion & crown wheel an get it pegged
which will stop the crown wheel & pinion riding on each other under load & stop the worn edges where does all the
worn metal particles go....

Have you had them fitted on your old but good pinion and crown wheel or got new ones or got the HD ones that Ashcrofts sell for ~200 quid?

Nope I got complete new hd units, front is a 4 pin & rear has lsd. Just bought another D1 with a locker in the rear, I will remove
the diff pan next week & see whats in there.
Remove the diff pan your thinking yer its got hd weld on diff pans front & rear.
