Hi all - Just a top tip for you....
last summer i set about banishing all the nasty squeaks, rattles and vibrations in my L series Deisel. After lots of anti-drumming pads inside the doors and roof followed by a layer of felt the road noise was dramatically down, however the engine now seemed louder. I have now covered the inside of the bonnet in stuff called "r-blox" which is a rather reasonably priced sound deadener....trust me - you ALL need to do this!!! My diesel now sounds 30ft away. At 70mph it is silent!!! Best thing I ever did!:)

Could insulating the bonnet not result in a higher running temperature? I would say that the metal bonnet conducts some heat away from the engine bay, especailly when the vehicle is in motion. Insulating the bonnet prevents this. Watch the temperature gauge in the suimmer.

The stuff sits behind the factory fit felt and has an aluminium coating to reflect heat. I used similar stuff years ago on my 1480 turbo mini and had no cooling issues (well....no more than normal on a 1480 turbo with a side mounted rad!). Lets face it - after a big plastic sheild has been bolted to the top of the engine coated in foam I doubt this stuff will make much difference to the cooling..

r-blox is the dogs wotsits - I work in acoustics and use it to great effect for acoustic baffles. Weight-wise, it actually has a greater composite loss factor co-efficient than lead! (thats probably not that amazing to anybody who doesnt work in acoustics). If your engine overheats after fitting r-blox then there is something seriously wrong!!!

Interesting!
The bonnet on my V6 has no insulation at all, it's just metal and thats it. I like the sound of my engine though and wouldn't want to muffle it ;)
Point taken about the plastic lid that sits on the engine though. Why is it there?

Yup - R-Blox gets my definate stamp of approval. If I had a V6 I would probably want to hear it too...if only to get value for money from the petrol....

My 1.8 has a quite thick layer of felty foam under the whole bonnet! My temp seems to run fine (always just below half which I presume is normal) but by god it's hot under the bonnet when you lift the lid.

Maybe it's there to protect the driver in case of engine explosion  :D

Ok folks. I think I am now in a suitable position to confirm that after driving 500 miles to Cornwall and back for my summer jollies in the silly hot weather we are currently blessed with - A/C full chat and a nice big double layer of R-Blox sound deadening stuck to the underside of my bonnet behind the felt that my engine temperature has not risen a bit. There you go - tried and tested!! Only problem now is that if the engine went pop i would probably only notice when I see it in the rear view mirror! Indicator relay doesnt half sound loud without the L series rattling away into the cabin!
