We're collecting our new '95 D1 V8 ES tommorow.
It seems to have an awful lot more kit on it than most of the other Discos we looked at before commiting to this one like rear air con and other toys.
One thing I did notice (not that you could miss it!) is that it has great big "Discovery" decals up the side. Is this a standard feature or is it some sort of aftermarket thing? I don't suppose there's any way I can find out what it's original build spec was in the same way you would aproach British motor heritage about an old Triumph or MGB by any chance?

Standard I think, seems to have a few bits and bobs extra than my ES so might be a special edition or someones just tarted it up with the arches etc

Wouldn't bother taking it off if not you'll have a large dark patch where its not faded

Oh no, certainly not planning on taking them off - I quite like it actually.
I'm just trying to work out what is standard and what isn't. Is there an online reference I can check to see what is standard for a Disco 1 in ES spec?

I'm quite new to Land Rovers in general, really - this is our first Discovery.

drive to any Land Rover dealership and ask them - they should be able to look it up on their system and tell you :)

As standard it was the XS had the the "Discovery" decal along the side and not the ES, also rear AC was an option.
You pic isn't that clear to see if it's XS or an ES with XS decals but look as XS.
It's an ES if you have full leather, wood dash facia or heated front screen, multi CD player all standard on the ES.

Wood dash and heated front screen isn't standard as far as I know.

I've had a few ES discos but my current N reg is the newest so can't speak for later ones.

Air con, leather, full set of airbags, seven seats, electric sunroofs, electric windows and mirrors are all standard since launch (300) and after 1995 they changed the front seats and added electric control, but the heated part might be optional as I don't have heated seats in mine but they are electric.

Other bits like rubber arches and steps are also options I believe.

Don't forget the illuminated vanity mirrors, ES is the only model with them :)

The rubber wheel arch covers (standard only on the XS) and steps were not factory options, but like the retractable rear step, nudge bar, driving lamps, lamp guards, tow bar and all that stuff are accessories, so were purchased from the dealer and also supplied/fitted by them if you wish, even a spare wheel-cover was an extra cost dealer fit if they didn't supply their own logo cover, which most did.

My current one has illuminated Vanity mirrors but my older ones didnt.

Autodim mirror is also only on the facelift versions and I dont have a heated screen in my Facelift so I presume an option unless fitted to P reg onwards.

We are compairing like for like, XS to ES so that is 1996MY D1s onwards.
The XS was introduced in June 1995 with the other 1996MY discos, that could have been a P reg in June.
.

Remember the new XS well, worth poping into the showroom to see it as I did :)

A few further developments...
We collected the car today and have had a chance to find out a few more things.
The car was registered on the 11th of January 1995 - so the implication there is that it was manufactured in 94?

Interior is full leather including the little pack away back seats. Front seats are not electric, however.
There are ES badges on the front wing.
Both sunroofs are fully electric.
It has the cruise controll buttons on the wheel, but this doesn't function - will have to investigate.
It also has twin airbags - one in the steering wheel and one on top of the dash - I thought this was a feature of later models?

I discovered under the passenger seat a Phillips CD changer - Again, I thought this was exclusive to the D2 model??? There is no head unit, however - the PO must have removed it.

It just seems a very strange spec compared to most Discoverys we've seen - there literally isn't a single blank switch to be found anywhere?

Only other fault, save for the cruise not playing ball is the fuel gauge shows empty and the yellow light is on despite having put £120 in the tank. I suppose that implies the float on the sender unit has holed or might it be something less complicated to get at?

I've got a 1997 ES on a P plate. It has most of what has been described here; full leather interior, electric and heated front seats, electric sunroofs, windows and mirrors, wood effect dash and window switch panel, heated screen, illuminated vanity mirrors, auto dim rear view mirror, front and rear fog lamps, CD multi changer, air cob, etc, but it doesn't have cruise control, rubber arches or side decals.

All standard to ES mate, fuel might be bad earth and cruise could be split vacuum pipe (I need to do mine) or removed unit, both are common for cruise control

Given that the gauge reads zero and the warning light is on despite a full tank of fuel does that not imply that the sender is still functioning and at the bottom of it's normal arc of travel?
I thought the light would be tied in to the float level? Or is it more complicated than I'm giving it credit for?
