Not sure, never looked into the gauge but if reading zero I would have thought its the sender not giving a signal to the dash and maybe the level on there activates the warning light ?

Usually if a gauge doesn't read though its bad electrics or the float in it might have gotten buggered

The ES was introduced with the 1995MY disco (300 series or D1 facelift) and was in the showrooms in March 1994 there was no ES model in the outgoing 200 series.

In the UK only the XS models had the side decal along the side.

Some 200 series models that had a multi CD player and it was positioned beneath the front passenger seat, and then moved over and positioned to beneath the drivers seat on the later 300s so the driver can change a cartridge on the move.

The 8 way electrical operation of the seats was only an option on early D1s.

As u have SRS. then you have a 300 series no doubt you also have ABS.

As your disco was registered on the 11th of January 1995 I suspect it may have been a dealer demo car, as dealers were taking pre-orders on the "new facelift" disco then.. but who knows :)
Who was the original owner?

It’s a little difficult to tell the first owner from the service book – @ 3 years old the car obviously finished its 3 year finance cycle and was traded on. The then new owner decided to put a sticky label over the original owners details and write in his own. If I hold the page up to a lightbulb I can make out Car**ted uk ltd ? behind the lable (where * is illegible).

I thought D200 / 300 applied specifically to Diesel engines? Is it actually a model designation irresepective of the power plant?

You are correct in that the car does have ABS.
The CD changer is the philips type and was accessed via a removable panel under the passenger seat base. I did press the eject button but nothing happened. Presumably because there is no head unit in the dash?

I believe the DVLA can provide a list of previous owners, I may be wrong as i've never done it.

Your correct the 200/300 relates to the engine, it's not a model desigination but usually refured as the 200 or 300 'series' by dealers and owners as there is also a petrol engine and later two petrol engines in the line up, don't seem to use the word 'facelift' for the D1 as D2 owners refur to the D2 and D2 facelift.

Philips is the standard kit for UK 300 D1s the CD changer shares the same power supply has the head unit which is picked up from the rear of the head unit and transfered to the play via the interlinking data cable.

Mines a GS on an R plate, 300tdi with no leather no air con no ABS , single line brakes, was the GS a basic model then?

The form to send off to the DVLA to get a list of previous owners is a V888 plus a cheque for 5 quid - or at least it was the last time I did one. Knowing the good old DVLA that'll have gone up by now...

Given that my particular vehicle is a 300 series (albeit with a V8) and predates the XS model by about 6 months and apparently propper 300 series production for 2 months I think it's logical to assume from the information gathered that it was probably ordered in as a dealer demo vehicle in ES spec with a lot of other option boxes ticked.
I'm guessing that as the XS model wasn't even released until 6 months later that, like the rear air con, the rubber arches might possibly have been factory fit to show what you could order if you wanted to. Equally plausable is that they could have been fitted at a later date.

I think the only way to know for certain is to follow up the V888 and BMH leads?

I now have a few more pictures. If anyone happens to have the appropriate radio gathering dust with a code then I'd be quite keen to get my hands on one of those to fill in the hole in the dash!

A nice find when I lifted the rear seats for the pictures was that I found three pieces of curved black metal with two prongs on either end. Looking at the roof bars, I believe that they should fit there to act as a roof rack? There were also two long red poles in the bag. I presume they have something to do with the red bottle jack in the engine compartment behind the n/s headlamp?

Excellent condition with just the damper on the in the rear step to replace.
XS was introduced with the 1996MY and had front fog lamps, I believe that all ES models had fog lamps also, as the 1997/8MY does :).
But I'm more interested in the MGs I see and the Midget, I use to have one MLX 585D in BRG colour it cost £860. :)

Roof cross bars and the jack handle in the bag lay under the rear split seat lift them up and it lays there perfectly may be some Velcro straps maybe not as it's a place I never have to go to.
A head unit to control a multi CD-player if that is a Philips unit will look like this my one before it went on e-bay.:)

If you take your VIN to a main dealer and ask for a DDW print out it will list the build spec and build date + other info. you could price up a gas strutt for your rear step while there, if they think you are spending they are more likley to help.

Interesting? I didn't know you could go into a dealership and get info like that? Mind you, all our other stuff is made by companys that don't exist anymore (MG / Triumph).

Yes, the CD stacker says Philips on it - there's a couple like the head unit in the picture on ebay but none have a code unfortunately. I guess it's just a game of patience!

What's up with the rear step? I can stow it the up position and it will stay there if I want - is it supposed to spring into the up position on it's own?

There are a couple of niggles with the vehicle but nothing too serious...
There are a few holes in the tunnel surround where I guess a phone system used to live
The pocket in the rear tailgate is cracked
The fuel level warning light remains on and the gauge doesnt move but that's been covered else where in the thread?
The cruise controll doesn't function - I've read about the vacuum hose issue.
We only have one functioning fob but a new one is on order
It's sluggish as hell on LPG - booked in next week at the LPG service centre in Ripley.

It shouldn't take too long to solve all the above. I suspect it'll just boil down to patience in sourcing things like the rear door pocket and a radio.

Toys in the background are a '67 Midget, '67 Triumph GT6 Mk1 and a genuine '75 MGB GT factory V8. The Midget is looking for a new home now that the Discovery has arrived, however. ;)

My understanding was that the build info etc is available for the D2 but not the D1 but I bow to the superior knowledge :)
The step should return upward to it's parked position.
With the radio code, it can be found and removed if required, most ICE shops will do it, without it u are unable to test the unit when received which I think is important, unless, the code has not been activated by the dealer like my old Philips unit .

I have now installed a Pioneer CD multiplayer and head unit that I had spare and the sound and performance is far superior to that of the factory fitted Philips kit.
