Hi,

On my RR P38, everytime i press the brake pedal i hear a whirring noise somewhat like a motor turning, there is no loss of braking and have no waring lights/messages showing.

Can anyone advise what it might be and how if i need to go, go about repairing whatever is broken/causing the problem.

Ta in advance.

It's probably perfectly normal; most cars have servo assisted brakes. Rangie's have a compressor..........probably that kicking in, tho shouldn't go every press of the pedal, mine kicks in every other depression.

Mine dont whir.. Id still get pads & discs checked. wouldnt harm doing so especially if you havent replaced them since ownership

Probably the compressor for the brake system running. Shouldn't run on every press of the brakes though. If it does then the brake pressure accumulator is probably on the way out.:)

As said, it's probably the brake booster pump running. You can check easily, open bonnet, turn ignition on (no need to start engine). Infront of the coolant expansion bottle on the inner right wing is a motor with a bulbous black sphere on top (the accumulator). Push the brake pedal a couple times and you should hear the pump run for a few seconds. It should only run every 2 or 3 pushes of the brake pedal to replenish lost pressure in the accumulator. If it runs every time you push the brake pedal then you need to replace the accumulator, easy enough job. Just depressurise the brake system first with 30 pushes of the brake pedal (ignition off) else it will be messy! No need to bleed brakes after replacing if done carefully.

Driving home from Eastbourne this morning this thread popped straight into my head. It seemed that every time I braked, an electrical-type whirring noise sounded. I'll listen-out with extra care for the next couple of drives just to make sure it is every press and that my accumulator might need changing.

I thought it worth updating this thread so you guys know you helped someone other than the OP.

I'm pleased I remembered following this thread way back in May.

Thanks everybody!

My break booster pump kicks in every other depression but sometimes also every depression. Most of the time every 2. Probably getting tired too. But when turning ignition on I get this same electrical noise for 18 seconds and quite loud (precisely 18 seconds and not 19 or 17). Normal?

I wonder if it’s better to leave it like this or to change the accumulator to prevent pump getting tired. On the other hand, after 13 years the pump is probably already tired. I would be…
Thank you for remembering this tread. It’s helping me too. Steviebabes what are you going to do? Changing yours?
