Disco 2 Shockers

Done to death, but not for some time.

D2 is now 20 years old, approaching 100k and failed latest mot on, amongst other things, a broken rear spring. I decided to do both rears and then all 4 and am now thinking the shocks are probably tired by now so am doing those also. I've got a set of standard replacement springs and need to decide on some decent standard shocks, so

Britpart oem type
Monroe Black
Super Gaz

mostly road use with odd bit of green lane,

or is there anything else new since previous discussions ?

Mines the same age and almost at 100k and I went for the Terrafirma pro sport - +2” as I put longer springs on the front and raised the air bags on the back but they’ve been great. Firm, yes but good off road for how I use it.
I tried OME’s but didn’t get on with them but that’s just personal preference

I have Black Britpart shocks on both my D2 and P38.

So far they both have been great, being an oil shock as apposed to oil/gas the ride is still quite good.

A Gas shocker will give you a firmer ride, not to my liking personally.

Super Gaz are hard and unreliable in my experience. Monroe softer than oem. Depends on what you like. I like a floaty ride and my ACE keeps the monroes in check in the bends.

Useful to know about the Monroe being softer as I don't have ACE or air, so given the Super Gaz comments I'm leaning towards the Britpart blacks.

Steer clear of Monroe, i've had them and removed them after short time as i felt like in a small boat on a wavy ocean so fitted Bilsteins which are the best i've ever had

Last year I replaced my 2 years old Monroe with Bilstein. Big mistake, now I have such a rough ride so cannot use my 18 inch wheels, only 16 inch wheels with a bit lowered pressure.
The used Monroe's I gave them to a friend, who complained rough ride. After installing them, he was so happy.

You are right SF it was a bit boat like at first, but 6 months in they have settled and feel soft but not too wallowy. Or maybe i am used to it now!

If you think that shocks can become harder in time rather than softer then i can't comment more

I also felt Monroes soft and changed to Bilsteins (only front and kept the Monroes at the rear where I have air springs). Satisfied with this set up.

if a shock has been left on its side for a long time its best to run them through the entirety of their travel a few times by hand, otherwise you'll have a boat like ride for a little while
