Shock height compared to Discovery

Hi

I just removed all wax oil from my shock and find orange original de carbon V45 2056 23 shock.

Google doesn't come up with much other than Discovery shock.

I need new shocks but want to keep it same height, anyone know height difference between defender and discovery shocks?

I may be wrong but surely the shock has nothing to do with the height, that is determined by the spring. It is more important to ensure that the shock is a matched length to the spring height to prevent it bottoming out at full articulation and damaging the shock.

As above. Unless your Discovery has uprated/raised suspension then standard "Discovery" replacement shocks will be fine.

correct about the shocks not controlling height, a shock when the vehicle is sat should be near mid extension to allow for damping suppression. mind you if the vehicle has been raised is some way you may need a shock to match!

I have a Defender 90 V8

I found more info if I type Delphi V45205623 I get loads of results. I get a all sorts of compatible oem parts numbers. appears to be standard height shock need to have a look at the springs and measure.

Would some kind soul mind measuring the ground clearance to the bulkhead bolt in the outrigger in case I don't get a chance to remove the spring in time for the LRO show!

To measure the spring height you would be better to measure from the top of the axle to the chassis. That way the only thing effecting it is the spring and the weight of the vehicle. If you measure ground clearance that can be altered with different tyre combinations. I can measure mine for you if it helps, but I am running a 110 with HD springs.

I removed the turret on the driver side and jacked it up until the spring was loose.

It is around 38-39cm long, I phoned a shop and asked how long a standard spring is but they told me to measure from center of wheel to wheel arch.



I don't have any wheel arches on, I would have thought the spring length would be enough.

I guess it depends on whether its a heavy duty that would effect ride height.

Anyway I measured center of wheel at the rear to the rivet line just above the arch and its about 64-65 cm. I don't have any doors, roof or sides on the back so its a bit lighter than normal.

Have the springs been on a while? If so, they've probably deformed a bit. So even if you swapped like for like the height wouldn't be the same. If you haven't got the eyebrows on it'll make you think it's got a lift on it. If I was you, I would just put standard springs and shocks on. (you don't sound as though you are desperate for a lifted Landy) A new set of standard springs will make your Landy stand tall and proud.

I found some green paint on the remains of the coating which I believe is what the original standard springs have?
I believe they have green and blue paint on the driver side, there is not much coating left on these, but there was some green.

Hopefully I can pick up a suspension kit at the LRO show.

Can't remember the colour codes but each spring is slightly different to compensate for possible weight/less weight at that corner. Driver, fuel tank etc.
I'd presume lifted ones would follow that idea, but I don't know.

Found this table of spring lengths and it matches up with my length and colours so standard springs and shocks for me.

If it's of any interest I fitted the standard britpart items all round at a cost of £130, completely transformed the car and it does appear to be sitting a little taller.

Same here

Yep I got genuine LandRover kit (shocks and springs) today at LRO, no deals on the turrets etc, cheaper to get it off internet.
SP 4x4 were actually charging more on 1 item I was looking at, than what it was listed on the web site inc VAT!

Is not surprising, now there is so much volume thru the internet. A lot of companies seem to be not offering discount at shows. After all they have to pay for the show itself. I think it is more of a point of them having a touchy feely showcase to display their produce.
