Scotland,
I've been trundling along doing bits that were needed but no major issues. Ball joints, brakes, discs , etc. All the usual BUT......
Something isn't right. The big girl didn't like the crunchy ice/snow, and started clunking. Which is why ball joints were donr. She came home, and almost immediately she started playing up. The off-road message kept coming up, and I was sure there was still the occasional knock. So back to the mechanic. Nothing to report.
So home she came. Nope, nope, nopeity , no, says I, she's still not right. The message is still pinging up, there is still a knock, and might sound weird, but on turning steering to right, she feels really light and as if she wants to spin out of my hand. Off she went to mechanic. Nothing found.
Yesterday all of the above still happening , but on manoeuvering out of car park, I had to put on a tight right lock. It felt and sounded like she was clunking over something. Then no more clunks and fine for rest of drive. Although still very light on right turns.
I'm having tracking and balance checked. Contacted mechanic he can't see her for a couple of weeks, but has said get them to also check 'knock on plate'. Phoned friend who is also mechanic he suggested steering damper. Anyone got any other ideas? Or agree with above suggestions?
Thanks in advance :)

I think but don"t quote me on it the camber ,caster angle is adjustable on the bottom arm bolt if its not put back where it was (round marks on washer position) the car will pull easier to one side than the other when steering and if not tightened up proper torque it will clonk,.....

Great call. I'll suggest it to mechanic who did the work. Mainly because the lightness happened after ball joints replaced.

The steering rack has a servotronic valve or whatever it is called - and this varies power steering assistance for various road speeds, it has been known to fail and either give super light steering or super stiff steering, might be worth locking at!

As for the knocking - CV joint possibly - there are also reports of driveshafts popping out on full lock if not seated correctly.

Thanks Ant. The light steering is worst at under 5mph. It seems to almost spin all the way round on it's on. As if something has grabbed it and is pulling it out my hand.
