The old girl performed faultlessly on our trip to Spain.Didn't use a drop of water (temp 38+ in central Spain) Covered 2,700 miles at an average of 22.4 MPG (worked out not trip comp)

Below is a comparison between driving and flying (4 people). We had 2 stops both ways (2 rooms each time). These were the cheapest flights we could find, but I'm sure a low fare expert could do better.

DRIVING

Ferry(Newhaven to Dieppe) £205.00
Petrol (approx £1.10 to the Euro) £585.00
Tolls £115.00
Hotels £340.00

Total £1,245.00

FLY and HIRE

Air Fare x4 £744.00
Car Hire (family saloon) £325.00

Total £1,069.00

As you can see its cheaper to fly and hire, but we look at the drive as part of the holiday. Roads in France and Spain are a doddle compared to the UK and to cover 600 miles a day is a breeze (could easily do more especially in a Rangie) At one point on a toll road between LeMans and Angers at 10am on a Monday morning I was the only vehicle as far as the eye could see, driving heaven:)

We gave the old girl some TLC before the trip, which included

1) New EBC pads and discs all round
verdict: stop really well but not as much feel as I was expecting

2) 4 new boge shocks
verdict: improved overall ride and handling, but I guess the old shocks were not as shot as I thought, because only a marginal improvement.

3) 4x General Grabbers UHP
verdict: exellent, one of the best mods I've ever done. Great comfort and virtually silent without a hint of tramlining, at £100 a corner all in, great value to.

Plans for an upgrade to a MKIII have been put on hold for now. The P38 has put a smile back on our faces.

Hope this helps someone who may be considering the driving option. If you have time on your hands I would recommend it. The combination of European roads and a P38 is superb.

Hi

I just finished a 6000km (3700 Miles) trip. We did mostly untarred roads and lots of very deep sand. The car didn't give any problems other than normal maintenance.

We had 190lt petrol, 75lt water and all the other camp goodies in the car. I think the car was a bit overloaded, as it tended to blow a fuse on the EAS whenever we hit a bump at high speed.

My best fuel consumption was 11.8lt/100km.
The worst was 38lt/100km - Pulling a Toyota pick-up with a 3.5 ton trailer through very thick sand.

I didn't work out the average.

The only thing I will do differently next time is to fit solar panels to the roof, as the batteries was a continuous worry.

I will also invest in a trailer. I don't think the car was meant to carry all that weight over difficult terrain.

Sorry for the lt and km. That's what we use here in the RSA.

Nice one.

The only trouble is, if there's not your own loo and nice fluffy towels at the end of a days driving my Missus tends to get a bit funny  Her only sence of adventure is if the channel gets a bit choppy!

But you have left out insurance, petrol, hotels, hassle of picking up the car and returning it as well, cab fair to and from the airport, excess baggage i think, you did it the cheap way, and the most convenient way too
