hi,
ive just bought a 1998 p38 2.5 dse.it has been running sweet as a nut :) & we have just been to london in it for a couple of days with no trouble at all. but the day after i was going down the street & when it got to about 25mph with no throttle on the back end of the car started to shake! (it shakes so bad i had to take the dog gaurd out as it was doing my head in) when it gets above 30mph its fine which i cant understand.if it was a faulty tyre wouldnt it do it all the time? it also does it under load (up hills etc), has anyone got any ideas please?
thankyou in advance

hi guys & thanks,i have checked all the tyres & they are ok, but my brother noticed excessive play in the front prop & thinks it could be the uj's so i have ordered 2.would it be ok to remove the front prop (mark it of course) & run it to see if it still does it?

You'll have no parking brake if you remove the rear prop, other than that no real prob with running on one prop for a short while.

BTW if you haven't been off road and filled the rims with mud or whacked a rim then my moneys on a worn UJ.

Would a worn A frame ball give that symptom? I'd never have thought of that, good one MHM. Have you seen that happen yourself?

Only thing is he's in a P38 which doesn't have an A-frame but a version of a radius arm. I wonder would worn bushes in the radius arm do the same?

I'm still sticking with UJ though ;)

Just a point on this marking propshaft before removing and putting it back in same place. No harm in doing that of course if that's what floats your boat. But propshafts are balanced off the vehicle before they are fitted at the factory. So it makes no difference whatsoever which way you put it back on.

Agreed, the only advantage of marking it is that the holes are on a slightly rectangular layout rather than square as you might expect so they only go on one way (well two if you count 180 deg rotated as different)

Make sure you mark both ends of both prop an diff etc

Beleive you can drive it with prop off, just dont do it for weeks

Good luck

If you drive it with the front prop removed, then you will put a lot of strain on the VCU which acts a centre diff lock, unless of course the VCU has already seized:eek:

thankyou all very much, i am just going up to my garage now to put the new uj's in & hope it cures it 'fingers crossed. i will let you know later on
regards
