I am replacing the head gasket seal ans have now got to reset the rockers. This is all new to me and I have no experience at any of this just working through it. I need to rotate the crankshaft and start with number 8 valve fully open. How do I turn the crank, how do,I know when number 8 is open and which one is number 8. Front or back. Simple stuff for many of you I know but I have no clue any help would be great

Defender 110 with 200tdi engine. Done both seals. Gasket and rocker cover seal. Also manifolds and the thermostat seal

setting tappets (valve clearances )is done using number nine method in that what ever valve is fully down you take its number from 9 ,ie 8 down do 1 ,5 down do 4 etc 1 is at the front 8 at the rear ,mark each one as you set it as they dont come up in numerical order ,remove fan and turn on crank bolt you just watch rocker till its fully down ,if you go too far just watch another thats moving and set the appropiate valve when the rockers just fully down,2 turns of crank will cover all valves unless you miss a few first time

james beat me to it!... :)

ok, so you have the bottom pulley on the motor?
fit a socket to pulley nut to turn the engine clockwise.
with rocker cover off 8 valves & rocker arms in a line.
nearest you @ the front is No.1
furthest is NO.8
if 8 is down adjest 1 = sum of 9!
if 7 is down adjust 2 = sum of 9!

and so on.
look up the quicker way of rotational needs for each numbered valve rocker to adjust,

"adjusting rocker arm in 200DTi"

if you have a haynes manual, its **** easy to read how to do it.

So when 8 is down I turn the screw on one until there is the right amount of clearence between the rocker arm and the top of the coil bit. So the valve will be pushed up at 8 and the coil compressed. Should I slacken off all the screws first

yes set 1 when 8 fully compressed ,you dont need to slacken them all of first unless engine locks as your turning over by hand while setting

All done put back together and it runs. However a few things. I understand that it has been idle for a while and may feel a but sluggish but how should it feel have only done a mile in it moving from one place to another

Also I got a bit breakdown happy and unscrewed a few things I didn't need to. A plate on the turbo two half circle plates. I can't get it back on as I snapped the head off a screw and the thread is blocked. I will replace it but how vital is it
