How exactly would you determine if no1 piston is at tdc on its compression stroke if the timing belt was off, if you just had it at tdc and set the belt up wouldn't the timing potentially be 180 degrees out?

Thanks

if the belts off whenever no1 is at tdc so is no4 you cant get it wrong,180 degrees only come in to it once belt is fitted as cam is 1/2 crank speed

So as long as no 1 is at tdc, and the sprockets are lined up and the belt is on its fine? Or once it's on do you have to check further... just finding it a but confusing

crank at tdc line cam and pump up,fit belt and tension ,turn engine over twice back to tdc slacken belt retension and check marks again

Thanks a lot. Is that procedure the same for pretty much every engine then. With tdc compression for no 1only being "created" once it's actually timed?

thats for tdi if yours is a 2.5 red block then timing is done at no1 exhaust peak which is marked on fly wheel and on front crank sprocket but the procedure is the same
