Ok the usual to diy or not to diy!

Looking at servicing the Discovery's (both 1996-1997 TDI's) one is Auto and one is Manual.

I am fine with a spanner and service my cars and kit cars but the Disco seems more involved!

The main problem I have with garages is the trust element of them doing what they say they are going to. I have called a main dealer and talked about there service and they said its the full monty... then I said what about this or that and no thats extra!

I would like to do it myself but am worried that I wont have the specialist tools or the knowledge to find all the parts and be able to service them properly. Like I said I do it on my kit car but if thats off the road its ok these ones are used daily for work.

What jobs are required to be done? (I am of the mind that if its easier to do it and prevent trouble I will spend the extra cash to do so) Also there is no service history with either so although they run ok I would like to give them the FULL MONTY!

If you could list what should be done and any special tools required to do it.

Servicing or repairing? no "special" tools required for servicing other than which i'm sure you have already if you service another car.
For repairs the may be some special tools you may wish to get, but then only use once or improvise like me and most owners, you will need the odd big spanner/s for certain nuts that the disco has.
If you get a Haynes manual for the disco all the info on servicing plus other stuff is in there.

I don't trust/can't afford/don't want to use garages to do work poorly that I can do myself.

Servicing a TDi 300 Disco is a piece of cake. Tools that are useful to have are:

Trolley jack, axle stands, socket set etc etc. So, straightforward stuff really.

As yours don't have service history I would be changing all fluids and all filters, so buy yourself a filter kit from somewhere like www.paddockspares.co.uk for £6.28+vat for the air/oil/fuel filters. The:

1. Engine oil and filter change - 7ltrs of 10-40 semi synth;

2. Fuel filter change;

3. Air filter change;

4. Gearbox oil change manual box needs MTF 94 - 3 ltrs; autobox needs Dexron IId or III, - 5ltrs

5. Transfer box, back and front axles all need EP75-90 GL5 - 6ltrs in total

6. Change coolant, 50/50 mix - 7ltrs

7. Check and change as neccesary all brake pads and brake fluid;

That should be enough to get on with - go on, you know you want to do it yourself :D:D:D

You will also need a torx 54 (from memory) for the manuel box filler, never drop your oil until you have undone the filler :rolleyes:

Do your swivels and check your wheel bearings are well greased at the same time.

Easy job, have fun!
