Ok so I was sat at traffic lights at the bottom of my road and all of a sudden the FL cuts out!!!!

A bloke was walking past shouted that I had a leak under the car so I jumped out and there was fuel gushing from the area of the OSR arch of the car.

I have had it in to the garage who stripped the arch out and said a pipe had come off so they have re attached it an zip-tied it for safe measure.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea why this has happened?

If it is likely to happen again?

Should I be removing the pipe/clip/zip ties and replacing with brand new?

Anyone had a similar experience or any pics of what is under that arch liner causing me the problems?

Thanks

just according what has happened to it do you have a photo ? if it is suspect I would replace there again some one my not have tightened it up

No unfortunately not. I will be taking the arch lining out myself when I get the car back so will post some of what I find.

Car just had a 10 year service will they have touched that area??

Aren't the fuel lines snap connectors?

Would have thought a fuel filter change would have been done. Weren't you the one that got charged a fortune for doing it? If so I'd be taking it back!!

Hi yeah I was officially had!!

So that filter at the back end is the one they would have replaced right?

I have decided I am not going to be taking the car back there!!!!

I am going to pull back the arch lining tomorrow and see what is going on.

Could it be that I need to replace filter or pipes because connections are worn?

The fuel filter is in front of the i/s/r wheel arch.
Held on by 2 bolts and a plastic clip accessed from under the car.

All the pipes are push fit snap on.

At least they are on my '06 TD4.

Maybe they broke the snappy clip bit and zipped tied it as a bodge.

Some highly experienced service personnel are so experienced I think they have no feeling in their fingers anymore.
I may be somewhat cynical now but it's the reason my airbox is glued together.

If it were me have a look at the pipes and see it the ends of the pipes are broken (should be the type you press a square block on either side and pull off) if they're fine then its likely it just wasn't put on properly and should be fine. Just be careful you don't snap the pipes they get brittle with age.

Ok here is what I have found.......

Do these connectors ever fail and need to be renewed?

Are the zip ties a good idea as a failsafe?

Anyone know where that loose connector has come from?

The earth strap fits to a connector spade that sits between the fuel filter and the filter(SOMETHING ABOUT STATIC ELECTRICITY) case:D i would have put the tie wraps on tuther side of the clip out the way of the blue buttons:cool:

I agree, those ties wraps look like they are pushing the blue buttons in.

I made a new earth strap using a Halfords radio key cut to size and bent to shape. It fits in a slot on the side of the fuel filter, which had corroded on mine.

The rear strap rivets had corroded through on mine and I had to re-rivet the back, after I had painted with Hammerite.

ok I am a self confessed perfectionist and coupled with the fact I am planning to tow a twin axle caravan over 600 mile round trip I need this to be bulletproof!! How much work is involved in completely overhauling that pump&filter area with new fuel lines and will that earth strap just connect onto a new filter?

Plus I have my 2 kids both under 4 in the car too!!

I just wish I could find a reliable garage to give the car and say "sort that lot out" regardless of £

I hope the weight of the twin axle 'van is within the MTW of the Freelander....

With regards to changing everything....pass.

The earth strap is a doddle to make, just need to remove the rusted spade from the connector, or you will have to make a new connector like I did..

Have you tried pulling the pipes off without pressing the buttons? If they come off then they need to be replaced, otherwise leave alone. I'm not keen on using tie wraps apart from a temporary fix unless you are using them to hold wiring in place.....

Yeah it's a Bailey Ranger 620/6 just under 1600kg MTPLM so 400kg under the stated max of the FL.

I will have to have a look at that earth strap. I had a tug at the
Pipes and the didn't seem to want to come apart. Just wondering
If the guys that did the service made a cockup!!

Anybody Got a pic of where that earth strap fits????

There is a cut out in the plastic on the side of the fuel filter housing. I just made a piece of metal into a z shape with some ripples on one side so it would grip better between the plastic and the fuel filter. Mine is just held in place by friction. I didn't photograph it else I would post a photo. Hoe that helps.
