I test drove my first series landy today. It felt like there was about 6 inches of free play in the steering (no pun intended but 6 inches may be an exageration!). This led to a weave rather than a drive. Am I just used to modern machinery or is this wrong?

yes it is wrong.
but with so many joints in the system a little play in any or all can have a cumulative effect.
wiggle, with assistant and watch each joint, also look at the relay. i found one with a worn spline, more play than you have!

Aye as the guys say replace worn ball joints and then adjust.
There shouldn’t be any play in the steering it should be smooth and progressive although it’s not like a modern car.

Ps
Bigchap you got that v8 bus on the road yet?

shouldn't be too long now clive,i need to get and install a complete dashboard minus instruments,check/change all lubricants, install my rebuilt starter motor and re-wire so about 5 years time!

If the steering relay unit in the front X-member runs dry of oil it can cause terrible steering innacuracy. Jack up the front end of the vehicle and disconnect the drag link to check for this problem. 88 inchers handle better if the spare wheel is not on the rear door
