Hello, I'm new and need help!
I currently own an LPG converted (not by me) 1964 Series IIA, and up until last week have never had a problem with it. I presume down to luck rather than my mechanical abilities. She's called Deedee.
Long story short I made the decision to move my 100L LPG tank. It was taking up way to much space in the tub as it had been mounted over the top of both benches. I made a new cradle for it, shifted it back a bit and dropped it down a few inches. Made a huge difference to the amount of load space! I should clarify I called up a LPG tech beforehand to double check I wasn't going to gas myself or blow up deedee. I even took notes.
Anyway - all was fine, plumbed it back in, triple checked the hoses, connected the battery, turned the key, pushed the button and despite her best efforts, wouldn't start. Checked everything again, and this time no turn over at all. After some investigating I have determined that on turning the ignition the tank is releasing gas, and that the light, wipers etc are doing just fine. There're no leaks off the tank, and the solenoid and fuel gauge are wired the same as I took them off. At this point I'm thinking is this a terrible coincidence that the starter motor has died a sorry death on the day I move the gas tank, or have I done something terribly wrong. I placed my bets on the starter circuit so I replaced all the cables in the starter circuit, checked and cleaned earths as well. Still nothing. Moved on to the starer motor. Got it out, bench tested it and it's firing sparks all over the shop. So, I take it apart to discover that the 2 positive brushes are completely spent, and the cable connecting them has snapped in half. SO I buy a new brush set, put it all back together, bench test it off the battery using jump leads and it is still firing sparks all over the shop.
I apologise for the very long first post, but can ANYONE shed some light on what the hell is happening with my truck. My mechanical abilities are limited at best but I'm learning as fast as I can (thank you Haynes) and if anyone has any information that might ease my education I'd be extremely grateful.
Cheers!
