hi a mate of mine has a 1961 series II with a 3.5 v8 with a sticky clutch it will not go in to gear with the engine running but with the engine off put it in gear and start it and it lunges forward

anyone got any ideas what to do or why this is doing this

cheers

Clutch plate rusted to flywheel (or clutch pedal not operating due to naff cylinders/no fluid). Check the clutch pedal actually operates the lever.
If this is ok and it has been standing, then plate is probably stuck to flywheel. In gear, foot on clutch, handbrake on, try to start it. Failing that, jack up rear end and start it in gear and drop it off the jack. Could be a bit cruel on half shafts with a V8 though:D (make sure there is nothing in front of you tho!)

Like Worf said if it's been standing a long time then clutch is prob rusted to flywheel. If you've got access to a field then rag it around for a few minutes with the clutch depressed alternately pressing and releasing the accelerator. You'll have to pull up the floor and take the gearbox out if you can't free it off - so it's probably work risking your rear halfshafts by giving it a bit of a hammering. On the other hand you might end up having to replace a halfshaft and take the box out though if you're too harsh with it.
