Hi all. My Series 3 has a few gearbox issues and, given I have a spare, lying quietly in the barn, I was wondering if we might use it. It has a plate screwed to the bellhousing that identifies it as a "Factory Rebuilt Unit" and has Part no. 600917 1, and serial number; K11571. Any ideas?

Looking at the clutch actuating shaft in the side it is a series 2/2a gearbox some more pics may help but factory rebuilds where done to the latest spec at the time of overhaul is there a date on the plate.

Not as far as I can see, just the above numbers. It makes sense to be for a 2/2a as it came along with a 2a needing a rebuild. Do 2a boxes work with early 80's series 3's?

Not easily series 3 clutch slave cylinder is on passenger side , some boxes can have the front section swapped over but that depends on what your series 3 box is ie Suffix A or B maybe possible suffix C not sure of suffix D not suitable. Suffix is stamped on edge of transfer case can be seen from under centre seat cover.
Do you know for sure if the early box is good?
What is wrong with your current gearbox?

OK, ta for the info. I have a 2a project for it to go into, eventually. It seems to be free and goes into all gears, while not fitted to an engine. Current box in the 3 jumps out of reverse unless I hold it, and that doesn't work if I put any revs on. Also trans box won't go into low range and 4wd won't engage... Basically the whole system needs an overhaul, and as I have decided to go for a galv chassis, I am prob going to send it to a reconditioner. Goes forward lovely!

Yes, definitely. Hoping it may all be about lack of use rather than worn out, and therefore able to be freed up and fettled by a good prod around and service.

Have a search “jumping out of reverse”
And have a look at the shafts coming out of the front output shaft as you say prob seized up a bit rust/ mud

4wd shafts see attached.
Reverse could just be a weak detent spring or loose bolt on selector fork , if original gearbox in for 1980 I believe you said should be later reverse parts which had been upgraded. Your gearstick is not fouling dash in reverse is it? Selectors can be checked with gearbox in place but needs floors out and tunnel.

Thanks for that. No, it doesn't foul anything and in fact seems reasonably tight, ie not sloppy, generally. I really think we are facing a lack of use type scenario, but we'll see. Yes, it's an 81, and with 33k showing, although we all know how much to believe what a 40yr old mileometer shows!
