hi gents i,ve rebuilt my series petrol engine which ticks over nicely, and starts first time. but wont pick up or rev, i have changed carb and fuel pump distributer points condenser .could the problem be down to faulty coil or wrong coil as is not new . regards Brian

all conected all good also run from fuel can incase problem with tank items changed points dizzy and condenser carb and fuel pump and no difference ticks over and starts sweet only coil not changed came in box of bits , was 24 volt but been rewired complete by professonal to 12 volt

think it is good set up tdc on number one no leaks dizzy is new ya think needs slight rotation

is it better or worse if you put some choke to it

if its better your mixture is lean as fook

if its worse your carb is ****ing fuel in and wetting the plugs borderline flooding

the service manuals and maintenance guides will only ever tell you what the carb settings are from factory new and evry series engine has its own little niggles and preferences ( just dont believe any haynes or factory manuals ) tune it by ear

ive had this happen on the side of the motorway in a petrol landy before now the bugger did exactly this and the culprit was the mixture screw had worked its self way out with the vibrations of the engine it took me 2 hours ****ing abbout with it top get it running again and when it did taking no chances i put a dot of superglue on the screw to make it stay where it was

il try tomo thanks, was wondering if coil was 24 volt from box of bits
'24v' coils are really 10v, thet run on a 10v ignition system so if your coil is working properly it should'nt make any difference.
24v coils have a different coil to dizzy lead fixing as well.

noticed old points where melted and bit of smoke coming from new ones any thoughts checked timing again all good and is fual delivery coil is only odd part not new

dizzy points and condenser new plus also had 2 others fitted and tryed all the same had two carbs on and two fuel pumps fual pipes good starts first time choke makes no difference on start plugs are good just will not rev wants to cut out

Smoking/melted points implies the coil isn't providing enough resistance, there might be an internal short. Try a new coil.

cheers mate just ordered new coil should be here this week il let ya know the outcome. thanks for everyones help

like to thank the members and most of all oxides as the coil was the problem , engine runs sweet after full rebuild

was out driving for 4 hours before hand greenlaning then turned off started but then wont pull under load only revs standing goes to move off get a few feet thhen revs drop , new 12 volt coil points new and set dizzy new all been working perfect but not now
