Just browsing ebay looking at distributors for a series 3 landrover, and came upon an electronic distributor for a series 3 priced at £48. In the listing it quotes

THE UNIT IS A HIGH QUALITY DISTRIBUTOR THAT IS VERY EASILY INSTALLED IN YOUR LAND ROVER SERIES 2,2A,3 AND DEFENDER MODELS THAT HAVE THE 2.25 and 2.5 engines.
IMPROVE YOUR FUEL CONSUMPTION BY AT LEAST 15%.
YOUR BELOVED ROVER WILL ALSO RUN MORE SMOOTHLY AND WILL BE EASIER TO START.
THERE ARE NO CONTACT POINTS AND NO EXTRA WIRING OR GIZMOS NEEDED TO INSTALL.
INSTALLATION IS EASIER AND MORE SIMPLE AS A REGULAR OLD TYPE POINTS MODEL.

The only thing I can see different to it compared to the one currently fitted on my 1973 series 3 is the wiring coming off the side. Has anyone on here bought and fitted this and how easy is it to install any advice is much appreciated . Thanks:)

looks like a chinese copy of the old lucas contactorless dizzy they used on the montego.... which is built in china mow, innit?
Montego dizzy did work on the series engines; drops straight in and does away with the points; has amp unit on the side, and provided you use an elecronic ignition coil with it works well.
NOT sure that it would give 15% more mpg though.... sounds WAY optimistic!
But certainly a worthwhile improvement.
If its a chinese copy, though, I'd not be too confident that it would be all that durable, well made, or that the mechanical bits were much cop....... but hey.... you pays your money & takes your chance.... its £50....... you'd not get a contactorless conversion kit like the old piranah for that.

My engine I removed has one, same sort of thing as a contact dizzy, just has an extra wire to the coil, 2 wires in total, simple to fit.
15% is overly optomistic teffys right.

After more browsing through ebay I found a LUCAS type 45D electronic distributor for less money,, (£43.99)

LUCAS type 45D ELECTRONIC distributor Land Rover on eBay (end time 03-Oct-09 16:07:42 BST)

Would you say this is a better buy than the one previousley posted up? Im guessing if I go ahead and purchase this item the only other thing I will need is an electronic coil to go with it.. am I right in thinking this or is there other things I'll need? Any further advice on fitting/getting it up and running is greatly appreciated.

Just completed checkout at simonbbc.com for a Lucas 45d distributor and sports coil, it come to £69 with delivery so a fair price all round. Just gotta await for it arrive and fit it now. Im guessing I will just setup like a standard coil, is this right?

Thats what he told me, he did mention that unless I'm using a highly tuned engine the slightly cheaper (£62) unit would suffice!

Yeh I saw the one with standard coil for £62,, but thought Id chance it for an extra £6. All units on his website look well made and worth the cash like,,glad I never purchased the first one I found now:)

Well simonbbc.com had same or similar unit inc electronic coil for £62 delivered, I've ordered one so I'll let you know how it goes!

Myn arrived this morning,, will have a go at fitting it tommorrow when Im home from work. Has yours arrived yet mate and have you fitted it?

It's here, haynes manual out...just abit wary of adjusting the timing by mistake so I may go and annoy a mate while I do it, he's a seasoned petrol head which helps!

Did you fit it in the end mate? never got round to doing myn today but im keen to hear how you got on.

These things can make a big difference.

One major benefit is that the Timing and Cam Dwell don't wander away from spec.

If you had an engine with sick ignition, you might really get 15% better mpg.

What you will get will be better starting and smooter running under load.

Oh Yes, and all the five HT leads will fail soon due to the high sharp voltages.
