always made me laugh as I always caught the bus to work until a month ago when i bought the landy .... I'm not a failure anymore!!!

Headgasket could well be the major cause for your non starting if its completely fubar and blowing betwixt the cylinders.

May well be a combination of things though

If your gonna be a failure?
Make sure you are the...
Best!!
DaMN failure
And show those....
Doubters!!

Ok , havent got a price yet , ill update when ava , poss later today.
This is what he has told me is wrong , sump taken off , no metal in oil , underside seems good so thats a bonus,
head gasket has gone and rings need replacing , also one of valves is miscoloured as if gases have been escaping , so that needs sorting , also dip stick tube has come loose (hence loss of oil) and needs to be either welded back or rethreaded , and oil/filters obviously need replacing.

So this is we ( I ) stand ,full head gasket kit , rings , oil filters , dip stick repairing and labour.

Doesnt sound too bad , mechanic seems quite relieved , im just worried about Labour costs.

If any of above doesnt make sense its probably me not him , there was a lot to take in.

Hopefully good news there Neil............................. a few thoughts,
1/ Has he said your bores are good? Is he going to hone them at least? Replacing rings alone is fine IF the bores are good.
2/ Dipstick no problem
3/ Is it one burnt valve or burnt valve and seat? If it just needs valves grinding in that's a job you could do yourself at home, tools/equipment literally wont cost more than a fiver, you'd save some money on labour and it'd be good for you!
As usual, good luck

waldamar depends how much it all comes to , it needs MOT doing also , Im hoping thats just a wheel cylinder and a indicator bulb , I can do that myself , to be honest I need it back on road asap , ive been without for 6 weeks and ive got 3 kids , If I was really lazy (and had money) id get him to do all MOT work also and MOT it but I dont want him charging me £35 labour for wheel cylinder and bulb so ill try to make savings that end and will prob let him sort valve out , also I want it back up and running. looking at costing on internet , looks as if all parts can be purchased for approx £150
in total so im hoping I can get in all done for £500.

Understood - but valve grinding is very time consuming and easy to do yourself once your man has released the valves, all you need do is take head and valves home [on the bus!] Always worth doing when the head is off.

At last I have a price, £640 , that with VAT , parts , labour , cups of tea , bruised thumbs , I'm quite happy with that ,

Any thoughts on price ?

If he does a thorough job and doesn't just cobble it together and the problems are cured then that's probably a fair price.
Fingers crossed all goes well and you have a reliable Landy again. :)

Hope fully a happy ending and no more bus rides!

I will have spent about £1000 on it when this is done , although over a year in little bits , door tops , starter solenoid ,wheel cylinders , paint and little bit and bobs ,I bought it off ebay for £1500 buy it now ,bulkhead and chasis are solid so hopefully I can leave it alone for 12 months at least although I know heater valve is leaking but that's an easy one
