series 3 wont move in 2wd

i'm a disco man and i don't know much about them , i know even less about series 3 so am looking for some pointers , my next door neighbours series 3 1972 petrol engine , as he was changing gear there was a loud clunk and he lost forward motion and can only get forward motion in 4wd now. he was changing gear while slowing down to take a right turn if it makes any difference .
so does this sound familiar ? can anyone offer advice on what to check ?

Sounds likely; clunk, loss of drive to rear wheels, motion re-gained by engaging drive to fronts....... it's the 'classic' symptoms....

Yup.

Could have added, possibly failed UJ, diff, propshaft, gearbox output shaft and maybe a whole host of others, but thought to start easily and obviously ...

... I had similar problem with my series way back ... did a load of stuff before checking the half-shafts ...

But I think you are a ****

if you get somebody to laydown beside the landie while trying to drive in 2wd and see if the rear prop still turn
if it turns but no forward movement then its something in the rear axle
if it dosnt turn at all then its gonna be gearbox or transferbox
my money is on the half shafts in the rear
