Got to replace my gearbox but am finding a lot of different comments about recon boxes. Can anyone recommend a good recon box (with transfer box) replacement?
Beaumonts & Simmonites seem to come out well.

Don't know the ones you mention. But both Ashcroft and whitehouse & son are good if expensive. Beware cheap ones as have cant have had much replaced inside.

Our very own James Martin will rebuild boxes if you want originality.

Thanks Don,
Ashcroft don't do Series boxes anymore but will give Whitehouse a ring tomorrow they don't seem to have their own website. The advice about cheap ones is well taken and something I hear a lot so will be giving them a miss. Need it reasonably quickly as I am taking the old bus to Sweden in a month - right up to the arctic circle - hopefully:biggrin1:

My local indie recommends Whitehouse over Ashcrofts every time.....not that I have used or can afford either.

James Martin has had nothing but praise from everyone thats had work done by him from here

If you like a gamble, you can pick up 'recon' boxes on ebay. As always though, its a gamble because you can't tell what its like to drive, when its sitting on a pallet.

That's what I have done, time will tell if I bought a pup. It came with an OD though and that's worth not far off what I paid for the whole lot (somehow).

I'll let you know in 3 weeks if i am in sh!t street or not

Thanks ronsealdeath. Just been recommended Beaumonts in Halifax. Can get a standard one off the shelf for £350 and a drive to Halifax :) Not really a problem as I work a lot in Yorks. I would still be interested if your ebay one is ok though if you could keep me posted.
Cheers

No worries, i have just bought an old engine crane so it's off with the seatbox once my missus goes up to her mum's in 2 weeks time. I'm hoping to take a load of piccies if so i will post up the swop. Just need a new clutch now ready to go in.

Good luck on the gearbox
