My 1973 2 1/4 litre petrol station wagon appears to have lost power over the last few weeks. The engine feels strangled.I have checked and cleaned the points and air filter. It is not misfiring but is a lot less powerful all round.Hills are becoming a struggle!Could it be the carb jet blocking up or ignition timing slipped?Any advice would be much appreciated. This is my first time so please be gentle with me!

check the crap bowl on the fuel pump. then check yer ign timing . yer point have a plastic cam on them that wears down over time causing the timing to shift. do a search fer best way to time the fooker

fur wot its worth - i had sudden power loss on my 2.5 petrol series - changing the carb seemed to fix it completely - that was after I renewed all the electrics, fuel filters and had the timing checked.

Running a spark ignition engine with Old Time Ignition .... get a CAM DWELL METER and learn how to work it.

They can be gotten cheap these days from Maplins and places like that.

After that can you buy or borrow a good ignition STROBE?

Those are the tools to use.

Of course, better by far to fit an ignition KIT that uses the points only to trigger a transistorised board which fires up the coil. You get far better sparks, better starting and running, and the points gap doesn't matter, and the points don't burn away.

I commend it.
